I don't get it

I hope this is the right forum for this. I have a friend back home that always tells me how she finds the “Boondocks” to be funny. (we’re both black). I’ve read the strip every so often, and it never really hit me as particularly funny or interesting. So yesterday I saw the 1st season of the animated version for rent and watched it.

I chuckled a bit, but not a lot. I thought it was pretty crude humor, mostly offensive and only funny in small parts by a kind of “shock value”. So now I’m wondering if maybe I’m just not “getting it”.

I don’t think Family Guy is funny either, but everyone else I know thinks its hilarious. I’ve only gotten a few chuckles out of it and more often than not I find it a chore to even watch. I’m worried that I might be becoming an old fuddy-duddy or something because I just don’t think these things are as funny as everyone I know thinks they are.

Family Guy relies a lot on references to other shows, cultural phenomena and so forth. I beleive that the same goes for Boondocks.

Or maybe it’s just not for you. Hey, can happen.

Personally, I find Family Guy to be too self-conscious and unsympathetic for me to find it funny.

I’m not familiar with the Boondocks TV show but I read the strip in the paper fairly regularly. It does have a lot of references to other popular culture but not significantly more than a lot of other strips or TV shows.

As far as age I am a 41 year old fuddy duddy suburban guy who couldn’t be more white if I tried, and I get the occasional chuckle out of the Boondocks strip. Maybe I identify with the crochety grandfather?

I agree with the OP on “Boondocks”. I can see how a lot of people would like it (and I have quite a few friends that do), but it just leaves me saying “meh” more often than not. And at times I’m offended by it, somehow.

Comedy is subjective. I never “got” Benny Hill (though I’m always rolling on the floor when Family Guy spoofs him). Lenny Bruce leaves me cold. I can take or leave The Simpsons.

But Gilligan’s Island leaves me in stitches every time.

To each his own.

For me “Boondocks” is always ‘eh’ until a certin point in the episode when there’s a turn in he episode and then, because I’ve stuck with it, I get rewarded by a lot of payoffs and knock downs of jokes set up earlier. …and I just laugh laugh laugh.
