Someone tell me why I have this reaction. This is not about any political views. Sen Kerry seems to be a decent guy. Sen Edwards is very likable. I took an instant like to Mrs Edwards even though I haven’t seen much of her. After seeing Mrs Kerrey I just don’t like her. Something about her mannerisms or speech patterns or even the way she looks puts me off but I don’t know what it is. Its a gut reaction that I have no control over. Does anyone else have this reaction or am I the only one? I don’t have anything against rich people either. I would like to join them someday.
You can get the husband’s name correct, but not the wife’s? Huh?
:wally You see I have this rare medical condition. I have 10 thumbs and no typing skills.
She was born in Africa but was largely raised in Europe. Maybe accents that your ear can’t pin down make you vaguely naseous?
meant to add a :smack:. I usually try preview before I embarrass myself.
I think there’s just a very narrow mold that first ladies and potential first ladies (from either political pole) are supposed to fit into in terms of dress, mannerisms, how they relate to their husbands in public, etc. She’s a little too stylish, a little too outspoken, and, yes, a little too European, to really fit that mold.
I happen to like outspoken. To many political wives are made to be seen but not heard.
Teresa…
You go girl!
For a long time she just hovered behind her husband on stage when he spoke, and she seemed to be either bored or inattentive. I found her demeanor to be rather odd during the primary season.
When I actually heard her speak for the first time this week (she may have spoken before but I missed it), I thought she did a fine job. Plus her accent isn’t all that strong. With Edwards around, it seems that the Kerrys are loosening up a bit.
My impression of her is that she’s sharp and kind of matter-of-fact about what they’re doing, she doesn’t seem terribly impressed by the whole Presidential race thing.
This is stupid & petty (and I’m conservative Repub anyway so it’s also irrelevant), but the pronunciation Te-RAY-zeh just irritates me. I know that’s the correct pronunciation for as long as she’s lived, but it seems as wrong as if Mrs Bush decided to be called La-OO-ra.
I’ve met her a time or two, when she was married to John Heinz, and have seen her around for years. She’s been a fixture in the Pittsburgh area for decades.
I’m a conservative Republican, and I like her fine. She’s devoted to charitable works, and has done quite well with them. Her politics aren’t mine, but she’d make a fine First Lady.
Isn’t she from a Portuguese family? Te-RAY-zeh would be the way the family pronounced it. I don’t think it’s pretension.
Oh, I agree- I said my irritation at the pronunciation was stupid & petty & it was probably the one she had all her life (I knew she was from Africa, I wasn’t sure her family ethnicity).
So, she’d be our first African-American first lady?
Freaky!
Of course, George would mispronounce it.
I know my reaction is illogical but I can’t help it. I doubt it has anything to with an accet, in my life I have dated several women with accents and it never bothered me.
This might be part of the reason. I did notice that she didn’t seem to be into the whole process. I mean look interested woman, your husband might be the President!
I wrote Teresa Kerry on the blackboard 100 times to make up for the title
If I remember right, she’s from Mozambique. And this is very silly.
Thats why its in MPSIMS and not GD .
She visited my son’s day care, and my son liked her. She didn’t have a problem sitting down on one of those little kid chairs and getting down to the 3 and 4 year old kids eye level.
My son seems to have a good take on folks for a four year old. So I’m okay with her.
Nope. I have it, too. I don’t mind the european thing, or the accent (which I think makes her more interesting) but there’s something about her demeanor that really bothers me. She always looks PISSY. Like she’s just about to smack a cop or something. The last time I saw her do a gig, she was with a bunch of elementary school children and she was reading to them…of course, while they were setting up for the obligatory picture of all the kids sitting around her, she didn’t even grin. Nothing. She looked more concerned that one of them might scuff her white suit than for the purpose she was there for.
Which, let’s face it. Probably wasn’t because she loves children. I don’t know. That’s an assumption that is based purely on nothing. She just makes me feel that way. Plus, she was wearing these very heavy, big, dark glasses with crazy looking hair, and looked like she was just coming off a gigantic bender.
Why do I even care? I don’t know. My apathy for either major party in the next election knows no bounds. But dammit…I WANT to like her. I WANT something different in a first lady beyond the helmet haired, tailored suit, stepford mold. I LIKED Barbara Bush. She was a little different.
But I’ve gone on a bit. I just wanted to agree, that’s all
