I don't understand Peter Morris

Don’t you mean “woowoo”?

Those are the most entertaining kind!

Thanks everyone, and special thanks to Peter Morris. These new threads along with reading through the old ones has been a full day’s worth of entertainment, with more to come.

Thank you all!

ETA: and please keep it up. I’ve got another full day of work tomorrow.

I think I like this bwoo-woom idea. Broom. Broom! Damn it.

H8 SPEACH!!

Lower case obligatory words

You mean you even forgot when he tried to pull it again, on you?!

It is a slow evening.

One more bit of fun, if you can find is some of Peter’s bizarre reactions to what seem to be reasonable request for the million dollar challenge.

For example, if a dowser is being tested, they will hold an open, unblinded test to make sure everything is working. To most folks, this seems reasonable - the dowser can make certain that their ‘powers’ are working properly, i.e. all systems are go, and that there is no interference from anything in the testing area. If they have a problem with something in the area it can be fixed. From the JREF’s side it means the dowser can’t fall back on excuses about something being in the testing area that affected their abilities as they had time to do a test run and spot any problems. They can’t claim that the Moons of Jupiter were messing up their dowsing abilities because odds are the Moons of Jupiter didn’t move very much between the open and blinded tests. Naturally, the dowser must pass the open test before they move onto the blinded test, because if they cannot pass the open test, why bother with a blind one? Mind you, passing an open test is like taking a true or false test with an answer sheet sitting right on your desk. Seem reasonable to most folks.

Not the Peter, to his mind this is the WORST THING EVAR!

If you read most of that post, it is a perfect example of the twisted mind taking the most twisted and perverted view of what would be considered normal negotiations when someone is putting their money where their mouth is.

Wow thanks for the info and reading everyone  I appreciate it.

Okay, so now there’s a ruling that Randi should be dropped as a subject in that thread. I’m not sure that really serves anyone. It would make more sense to bar Peter Morris from participating in any threads regarding magic/ians, conjuring/conjurers, psychics, paranormals, science, rationality, proof, or any related subject. Or just ban him and be done with it.

I’m gonna go with the conclusion that Randi is a great man. And Peter isn’t.

That thread had me scratching my head. I’ve seen people defend Uri Geller before, but always on the basis that they believe he’s really psychic. I don’t recall anyone defending him on the basis that he’s never claimed to be psychic, but that thread has two individuals saying exactly that.

Hell, the claim that he’s never claimed to be psychic is easier to debunk than the claim that he is psychic (which of course he’s not).

Yea, I don’t have a problem cutting off the side-discussion regarding law-suits and the like, but Randi’s spent the last 40 years explaining Geller’s tricks. Asking Dopers not to refer to Randi in a thread with the title “How did Geller do X” is kinda silly.

Yeah, that one makes me go ‘huh’? I can expect this nonsense from Peter, but from ianzin? He lost a lot of respect there.

If I expected a magic show and got the tricks done by Geller, I would want a refund. I’ve seen magicians at parties do more interesting stuff.

I expect that is his new tactic. If he can’t froth about Randi, nobody will be able to.

Thanks as well, that explains a lot. I’ll go back and read all of it after this post.

I found another bowel movement from Peter that goes back ten years, and it’s the usual pissin’ and shittin’ all over himself at the mention of Randi’s name there too. So stay upwind of him.

Not sure what to make of the ruling in the other thread about not bringing up Randi around PM, but maybe they are tired of the stench and don’t want him to soil himself anymore than what he already has.

I started a thread about the “Randi Restriction” in ATMB.

Eh, I think Ianzin point that Uri is a skilled magician was true, or at least defensible. His putting forward that Uri wasn’t trying to defraud people wasn’t. Uri clearly puts himself forward as having “real” powers in a way stage-magicians don’t, and uses people foolish enough to believe him to gain publicity and money.

Yeah I’m really baffled by Peter and I guess Ianzin who are defending Uri by saying that he has never “really” claimed to be anything other than a magician.

It’s patently obvious to everyone that Uri is really, honestly trying to get people to believe in paranormal things… but these two keep claiming time and time again that he’s just a magician and it’s all part of his act… or something… just makes no sense to me, even taking the Randi hate into account… why???

Uncle Leo is coming to dinner. Nobody bring up Vietnam!!

You may be misunderstanding the depth of Peter’s Randi hate.

I know I’ve never quite understood it…

Jeez, guys it’s so simple. As Mr. Morris says in Mr. Miskatonic’s link:
Mike has recently been in contact with the JREF trying to negotiate a new test. This time Mike is adamant that he wants the test to take place in California, at his favourite creek using jars filled with sand taken from the creek. Randi has refused to compromise. He demands that Mike can either be tested at the JREF offices in Florida, or at his home, but NOT at any creek in California.
Obviously, Mike the Dowser’s special, part-time, talent is dependent on using special sand and can only be sure to occasionally work in one tiny part of California, and for James Randi to not take his crew and testing apparatus cross-country in order to award Mike a million dollars is unconscionable.

That aside, more than once while reading threads full of shoddy thinking I’ll encounter a post written by P. Morris that deals with the issue at hand in a clear, logical manner. This will make me think that maybe there are two posters with similar names, Peter Norris perhaps?, because the guy’s irrationality about Randi and woo-woo don’t carry over to everything he writes.
