I don't understand the date of this paper.

I was browsing old newspapers on Google news and came across this:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=0MsrIDK0EWAC&dat=19150811&printsec=frontpage&hl=en

What the hell? The date on top of the paper says August 11, 1915. The stories do not correspond to that date. I thought these were just photocopies, if so, something is really amiss.

What am I missing?

No, it says 1945. If you look carefully, you can see the left side of the four very faintly. Whoever scanned it, put the wrong date for the Google title.

It looks to me like it should say 1945, but has been altered or was just an error in the first place.

I think you’re missing the faint line of ink and the spacing that shows the year is 1945.

Ahh! I see that now. Thanks, whoever messed up did so on some others as well.

My mind was blown, Thanks!

Either that, or it is a typographical error. It certainly looks as though it says 1915 to me, and on all the pages, at full zoom. Possibly the piece of type (there must be a word for that, but I can’t think of it:smack:) carrying the “4” was broken, and nobody noticed.

I have never looked into it, but what type of people scan and upload these papers?

I noticed the October paper of that same year has the same problem. I didn’t check any others, but whoever put those in should have noticed something weird and not categorized them by that date.

At least without figuring that the date couldn’t possibly be right.

August 11 was a Saturday in 1945, and a Wednesday in 1915. Since the paper is dated “Saturday, August 11”, it cannot be 1915 and almost certainly is 1945.
