I don't understand what voters Trump could've picked up between 2016 and 2020

I know the plural of anecdotes is not ‘data’, but using my mother as an example of what the OP is asking for (voters who flipped from 2016 to 2020):

In 2016, my mother was diehard anti-Trump and voted for Hillary. Her rationale (as far as I could tell) was that Trump’s behavior was awful, unpresidential, reckless, woefully ignorant and unqualified for the job.

Fast forward four years. My mother voted for Trump and tried to urge me to do the same. Her rationale was that Biden and the Democrats are anti-Christian, and that even though Trump’s behavior was as boorish and offensive as ever, at least he was anti-abortion, etc.

So, like many people, she had learned to swallow and deal with Trump’s flaws and just vote for him out of practical/ideological considerations. I would guess there are many, perhaps even millions, of voters who felt the same way, and that’s part of the reason why Trump picked up a few million votes between 2016 and now.

Maybe at least some of his new voters weren’t paying attention to politics for the last four years and didn’t really know that much about him?

Biden is an observant Catholic who goes to church. Trump is the illustration of the seven deadly sins and doesn’t know shit about the bible. So, your mother is badly misinformed. There’s more to Christianity than abortion. In fact, it’s hardly mentioned at all.

Hopefully, you’re educating her about how Jesus says to care for the poor, turn the other cheek, etc.

I do not think that it is a rational fear for someone in a suburb watching a protest from halfway across the country to fear for their safety. Not unless they are primed for fear, and are shown (often doctored) images that make them more fearful.

If all you saw were flames, cops in riot gear, and a lot of angry people yelling for several nights on end, then you chose to consume media that showed you these images, rather than showing you the vast majority of the people and the time of peaceful protest.

They don’t show the cops harassing and assaulting the peaceful protestors. They don’t show law enforcement driving people from Lafayette Square. If they showed a full picture, people would be afraid of law enforcement employing totalitarian tactics against peaceful and lawful assemblies, rather than the people engaged in exercising their first amendment rights.

They want to see this dealt with harshly because they have been taught to fear the other, and to embrace the authorities. They see the people being teargassed and shot with “non-lethal” munitions as the aggressors, because that is the narrative that they are told, not because it is the truth.

If being woke simply means to be aware of reality, rather than the caricature created by the media, then woke really isn’t as bad a word as it is made out to be.

These are the sorts of lies that one comes to believe from choosing to consume Fox and other right wing media.

Are you claiming that this is the truth?!

No rational person would vote for that platform.

No, I’m saying that that’s a lie that that is the message.

As is

Point is, they are being lied to. And they like it.

What voters did he pick up?

White Women +2
Black Men +4
Black women +4
Latino Men +3
Latino Women +3

Who did Trump lose?

White men -5

In total, Trump has gained more than four million votes over 2016.

Does it give anyone pause that the ‘White Supremicist’ party actually lost white men, while the party of identity politics lost ground with all the minorities they were claiming to help?

Latinos in border districts broke heavily for Trump. One heavily Latino border county that went +33 for Clinton and +43 for Obama was won by Trump by six points, a 39 point swing from four years ago.

Also, Democrats were crushed in Florida because of all the immigrants from Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua who fled socialism. Seeing Che Guevera signs and hammers and sickles in Democratic protests, and hearing open talk about socialism from the likes of Bernie and AOC turned them right off the party. They went heavily for Trump.

If you dig in deeper, you find that Trump’s biggest gains over 2016 were from young people 18-44 of all races. He gained in the cities, but lost ground in the suburbs.

If I were a Democrat, I would be worried that the assumption of Democratic lock-in for Blacks, Hispanics and young people is starting to come apart, and that identity politics is toxic. So much for demography being destiny.

In Florida, you still have many One issue Hispanic voters, and that One issue is Castro. Who is dead, sure but then there is his brother. Possibly one of the most foolish one issue votes.

Other one issue votes is- Guns, and the GOP gets all the NRA voters.

Next is abortion, and the GOP gets them.

So, you are saying that the lies that they were told helped Trump? I agree, it’s easy to lie, and it’s much harder to refute.

As a Democrat, I am worried about the lies that are told, and who believes them. It makes me concerned that the most effective strategy is to abandon the truth ourselves, and start telling the lies that people want to hear, that will get them to vote for our policies.

Once we go down that road, though, I don’t know that there is any coming back. Already having half the country believing delusions is bad enough. We don’t need the entire country being divorced from reality.

Trump is a factor, no doubt, but I dont think the major one. Or maybe not even one of the major ones. But the aura of “it’s Ok to be a open racist and the president supports me” cant be good.

What did you mean by this, then?

Which part of the ‘Fox news’ version of the Democrats’ message do you disagree with? Cause I actually took that from various things people have said on this message board.

This is false. Murder? No. Kill? Yes.

Where have we had actual lockdowns? CA have a very light “lockdown” but people were allowed to go out all they wanted, essential business were open and staffed, etc.

The WHO means by “lockdown” is no one but essential workers can leave their homes. Where have we had this?

Bah, xenophobia and racism is getting more common- look at Boris Johnson and Brexit. America is not exceptional in this.

Trump cares for the little people?

If all you watch is FOX and OANN, you would get that opinion. Listen to talk radio, etc. Four years of trump propaganda. No wonder he got more votes.

I know why. Because Republican voters are garbage people.

But that’s not his question. His question is, why are there more garbage people than before?

So, we have ever more garbage people?

Exactly what I said, the lie is more attractive than the truth.

Both.

“Various people said”, I love that little weasel. Lotta uncited and unsubstantiated paraphrasing doing seriously heavy lifting in that post of yours.

More and more right wing control over our media. Less and less trust in the media outlets that do actually provide a true perspective.

The gaslighting is working.
