I don't want to go to NYC

Exciting isn’t always what I’m looking for. Relaxing and taking in nature are high in my book.

And your comment on Buttplug Indiana is partly why I’m probably defensive. I haven’t said one negative thing about NYC other than it is busy and crowded (not necessarily negative to everyone), but people from the “big” cities seem to have the need to belittle those of us in the flyover states. I can’t wait to be around a whole city full of people with attitudes like you.

Like I said before, if you don’t like big cities, that’s cool. I totally understand it. But then I don’t understand the point of this thread. NYC is great because of all the big city stuff it has, amplified to the nth degree. If you don’t like big city stuff, then I don’t know what kind of answer you expect that would make NYC interesting to you.

You and your rolleyes would both be wrong. I’ve never spent more than three or four days there on less than a dozen occasions. I’m from Ohio.

So shoot your friends because they don’t care for hiking in New Jersey.

If you already know about “different strokes” then why do you keep saying “I just don’t get it”?

So turn it around: What could possibly be special about a hiking trail in Jersey? It’s the same as any other damn hiking trail in the country. There’s only one New York City.

Pretty sure this is MPSIMS and not GQ.

I originally posted because I find it interesting that some people are shocked (and apparently very defensive) about someone who wouldn’t just assume that a free day in the area equals a trip to the city.

Attitudes like me? I said I am a city-jaded person. I live in a town with a population of about 20,000, after I tired of living in London. (Dr Johnson be damned!) What I said was that even to someone who doesn’t much like cities, NYC is a fun place to visit. I have only spent a little over two days there (on my honeymoon, the rest of which was replaxing and quiet and honeymoony), and I loved it.

I’m not sure what kind of an answer you’re looking for. You’re flying in to LaGuardia. You’ll already be in New York. It’s strange to want to avoid seeing New York if you’re already there.

I’ll try it again… I don’t care at all that my friends want to go to the city and not go for a hike. When they said they felt otherwise I didn’t spend considerable time looking shocked and trying to explain to them that this was so much of a better option and looking confused that they didn’t all agree with me from the get go (and really never even considering another option). I didn’t spend any time explaining to the others that their life wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t find a park somewhere.

Why do so many people assume city = great? No need to get upset… just an assumption that I don’t share and wouldn’t ever dream on imposing on others.

And I just told you I’m from Ohio. I don’t think that it’s the attitudes of New Yorkers that’s the issue here. You’re defensive from the get-go.

And the majority of people in New York are from somewhere else. Many of them from “flyover states.” Many more of them from around the world.

So, saying I’m from Buttplug, Indiana is a complement to me, my level of culture, or my state in general?

Without that I have no problem with your post.

To me it is not at all… that is the point. Why can’t you understand that without it (or me) being strange?

Buttplug is just around the corner from French Lick, right?

Look, you have your own preferences, but you have to admit that it is a decidedly minority preference. “Strange” means “unusual.” It is unusual, very much so. There are more people who like to see a new city when they get a chance, a lot more.

What makes it something more than strange is that you have to actually make an effort not to see it, when you’re already there. It seems somehow intentionally contrarian. It’s like my getting a layover in London and saying, “You know what. I’m not interested in London, even though I’ve never been here. Let’s jog down to Portugal instead and spend the day hiking.”

And it’s not about us failing to understand. You’re the one who keep saying you don’t understand.

Yup… just past Taint.

Jaysus Christ, hypocrite much?

If Buttplug, Indiana had some interesting sights and attractions (and with a name like that, how could it not?) then I’d also be interested to go see them if I had a day to kill in the area. If I happened to have a day to kill near Rocky Mountain National Park, I’d probably want to go hiking. If instead I found myself a stone’s throw from NYC, I’d be interested to see the sights that NYC has to offer.

No, all cities are not interchangeable. Even the littlest podunk one-horse town usually has something unique about it. “I’d rather go hiking than see the sights of a major city” makes sense to me. “I’m uninterested by a major city because anything I can do there I can easily do somewhere else” does not.

I see it very differently… there are city people, and there are those who aren’t… I’m one of the later. The big difference is I can understand that and don’t force my opinion on others nor do I hold them in lower esteem because they don’t agree with me.

Here to Laguardia is a 2 hour flight and cost me $200. No big deal, I can go there any time I want. To me, it is an airport close to my destination. NYC is not my destination and I don’t know why it is mandatory to go out of the way to be pulled into it. Flying into London is very different… different country, different culture, different customs, and a different level of effort to get there.

I don’t understand why you don’t understand that not seeing it while “already there” is somehow wrong.

This is all your baggage, Spud, not ours. It’s you who seems to be uncomfortable holding a minority opinion.

Who said it was wrong?

Again, it isn’t that I’m in the minority (or uncomfortable there). But, is it right for the majority to belittle someone in the minority by telling them they are strange and unusual?

You said it was strange and unusual… I guess I don’t take those terms as complements, which to me equates to the notion that I’m in the wrong and should change.

Ok, everyone… you win… “whoo hoo… we’re going to New York City!!!”

This is you being defensive. “Strange” and “unusual” have objective meanings too.

I feel for ya, Spud. My brother is currently living in Germany. He wants me and my gf to come visit. I’ve never been to Europe, and have no interest in going. For me, a vacation involves Caribbean beaches. Many of my friends and my gf think I’m nuts.
