At a gas station in or near Columbia, SC.
I don’t buy gas very much (public transit to work) so maybe I’m the last person to see it.

How did you notice it was a reader? What tipped you off?
Genuinely curious, as I’ve never encountered one (I hope).
You may be confusing a chip reader (using chip technology to confirm transaction) with a card skimmer (illegal device to steal your CC information). A chip reader acts just like at any store; it asks you to leave your card in while confirming the transaction.
I’ve noticed them on several gas stations near me, and any time a pump is upgraded now they have the chip readers.
There was a sign and you had to leave the card in for a while instead of the quick in-out that I’m used to.
Read this thread this morning, and had yet to see one. Stopped for gas on the way to work, and the gas station* had a chip reader. Ruken, there’s a connection here. When you win the lottery, post about it and I will know it’s time to buy a ticket.
*It had recently been rebranded as a Speedway station. Last time I filled up there it was a Shell.
My brainwaves are leaking again, sorry.
The Safeway (grocery store) gas pumps have had chip readers for a few months. About time…the great liability shift was how many years ago? Quick google to refresh my memory…The shift happened in October of 2015, but there was a specific carve-out for gas pumps, which were all supposed to be updated by 2017, but that was extended to somewhere in 2020.
The “dip” slot looks the same as ever, but there’s an added wording to insert the card and leave it as the pump will hold the card while it’s being read.
I’ve noticed more pumps around here supporting NFC (Apple Pay).
But, it’s implemented in the laziest possible way, basically emulating a card swipe.
The pumps still ask for your Zip code, to confirm that the card isn’t stolen, when Apple Pay is pretty secure already - it requires a fingerprint or unlock code.
I’ve seen the NFC readers here, but there is no mention of it being specifically Apple pay, it’s just a bit of a bump out on side of the gas pump with a little contactless symbol on it. I have a credit card with NFC capability, and if there was a PIN to enter it would be on the gas pump keypad. If that’s how it works (I haven’t tried it, the NFC card is one I have but don’t usually carry), then it’s not any faster than swiping or dipping a card and entering a zip code.
