I set up the LAN at my house, which wasn’t half as hard as I thought it would be. I set the internet to shared so both computers at our house would only use one internet account and one phone line to get online.
Then just for fun I decided to set up a webserver. With the help of Dns2go it it wasn’t hard to do. Then I set used Abyss as my webserver and made a home page with HTML (which isn’t finished yet) Then today I downloaded GuildFTPd which is a FTP server so I can have people download stuff off of me from a specified folder. Not as hard as it seems. Only problem is I have dial up (broad band isn’t in our area yet) so my page is only available when I’m online.
you can see it here when I’m online :www.barrenwasteland.idleplay.net
Ummm… doesn’t your ISP have some server web space (a few megs worth at least) that it allocates members so that you could upload your webpage to the ISP server and access wouldn’t be limited to only when you are online?
Also, not to rain on the parade or anything, but usually, ISP’s don’t allow you to operate a server over a residential account. This may be tied to a bandwidth issue (how much gets moved either way, total), or an access time issue (if you leave your connection on all the time). All they will do at worst is bump your account to a commercial/business one with a higher fee. You can ask them just the same; what lilttle you’re doing may very well be a-okay. - DougC
I don’t leave my connection on all the time, so I don’t see much of a problem. Yea they do give out server space but I did this for my own pleasure. Sure it might not seem logical to you but I’m doing it for my own pleasure and to keep from being bored.
