I was reading an old Cafe thread in which it was pointed out that the hardest part of convincing creationist Christians of evolution is that they won’t even read the evidence! The books are too long, the info is too abstract for these folks.
I had a flash of brilliance that maybe we could reach them in a form many of them know and love- tracts! One of them might look something like this (in case you can’t see, there’s a man standing next to the ape, and it’s a parody of the best-known Chick Tract ‘This Was Your Life!’). If we find backing from a rich dude and put out a line of these, maybe we can reach a few friends and loved ones.
Oh, I thought you were showing the actual tract, not the cover.
Any time I encounter anyone who refuses to believe that such a basic biological process as evolution exists, I just ask them why they think it is they have to get a new flu shot each year.
Yes, but lorinada, these people claim, as you can read in the Google Ad beneath this :D, that MICRO evolution occurs and oc can be examined- viruse populations adapt b/c of circumstances, for instance- but that MACRO evolution, the changing of one species into another over millions of years of macro ev., never occured and has never been observed, and as for the observation part, they are oc correct- we can’t observe the species changing into another b/c we don’t have that kind of time!
And any evidence you give for macroevolution- the geological time scale, genetics, similarities in anatomy across species, carbon dating- is all shot down in different ways. They claim that the geological time scale- well, if you wanna know, purchase some of the material from the Chick website, or read it on a Creationist website. I won’t repeat it lest this turn into GD.
Somehow it seems sad to get someone to question their spiritualism.
They have so much invested in it.
But ultimately I do thinks it’s best for superstition to go away completely one day.
Creation “science” starts with the result, creation, and works backwards to prove it. Yeah, that’s credible. The earth “is” 6000 years old therefore evolution over millions of years is impossible. Ho hum.
Actually more like, " it’s not fair for this to be all there is so we must live forever as disembodied souls and bad people will get their comeuppance." That’s always been “known” to be the truth and any talk to the contrary is just ignorance.
Ah but I don’t think it questions their spiritualism. Just their dogma. I dunno, I’ve always thought the God (whoever that is) of evolution is a much bigger God than the God of creationism. And that if Copernicus didn’t kill God, no reason Dawin should…
But anyway. I really came here to say it was my thought that what might help witnessing to creationists is attacking some of the creationist memes. Like “This all couldn’t have happened by chance”. No kidding. It didn’t. Evolution is not random (not there isn’t an element of chance involved as I would hope any Christian who’s ever had sex would admit). It’s an interaction between genetic interaction and the enviorment.
So, when we put together the tract, I say go after the big creationist tropes.
