I finally bought some new binoculars and I'm very happy with them.

I started a thread a while back asking for info on choosing a new pair of binoculars. My old pair are Sears 7 X 50s and 30 some years old. I kind of decided they were adequate and forgot about buying new ones but last weekend I decided to go for it and bought some Vortex 12 X 50s. Very pleased! I didn’t realize how crappy my old ones were until I got these. They are much clearer and brighter. As expected, with the increased magnification, they are a little “jiggly” but for what I am using them for, they are fine. They make an adapter to mount them on a tripod and I may look into that at some point. I took them outside at about 11pm and looked at the moon. Wow, what a difference from my old ones. Not like a telescope by any means but a big improvement. One thing I noticed, they will focus on things that are fairly close (9.8 ft. according to the manual) but at less than about 100ft. the object being focused on seems very 2D, almost like a cardboard cutout of what you are looking at. Not a big thing to me. All in all, I am very pleased with them.

Both Jupiter are low in the south now. You can see the Galilean moons, the rings and maybe Titan

Yeah! I have Skyview Lite on my iPad and have been checking out the night sky.

Vortex is a pretty good optics brand. I’ve several of their rifle scopes, and a set of their Diamondback binoculars. 8 by “I don’t remember”. I also have an Orion 10 by 80 that are too big and heavy to hand hold. I only use them on a tripod for astronomical viewing.

I’m sure you’ll be happy with your purchase.

Is what I meant

Well, closer at least.
