I finally got high speed at home!!!

Ahhh, rural living in Canada.

When we moved here 12 years ago the only television reception options were: rabbit ears, antenna tower, or big costly motorized freakin’ satellite dish. So, for about 3 years we did the rabbit ears thing. We got 4 channels: 3 English, and 1 French.

About 9 years ago – shortly after kid # 1 – we finally bit the bullet and got satellite TV. What a glorious difference that made.

So, for the last 10 years, or so, we’ve been on dial-up. At first it was BAD! Maybe 14K download speed. But as MODEMs got better, and with accelerators and stuff we eventually were generally running at about 44K. I thought this was pretty good actually! The kids, however, couldn’t visit the same kind of places their friends did, and it took forever if a flash program was required.

About 3 weeks ago a tower finally went up in the neighbourhood and, as of this weekend, we’re on high speed. There were other options available before but one went into receivership and the other had some connectivity issues. The city of Ottawa just went through a 3P (Public, Private, Partnership) deal with an ISP to bring broadband to the whole amalgamated city of Ottawa. Believe it or not, there are a lot of rural folks (like me) who are now considered part of the city. (That’s another bone of contention.)

For those of you who have never been on dial-up, you have no idea, no idea at all.

No longer do I need to worry about hearing, “I’ve been trying to call you all morning and there’s no answer! What were you doing on the internet for so long?”

I had to vent my frustrations and pat myself on the back somewhere. Thanks for listening.

Never go back.

I had to, once, when they accidentally disconnected me (bastards!!!), and it was simply tragic.

It’s like heroin. You really should quit now, before it’s too late. It’s already too late for me, but save yourself!

I have a couple of friends who live near Ashton. Technically, they are outside of the “City of Ottawa”, so it’s extremely doubtful they could get this access, but just in case… does this new service really go to the so-called city limits? Who is the ISP? I know my friend hates being stuck on dial-up; if there was a way to change that, I’m sure she’d be really happy!

My FIL is still on dial-up too. I hate trying to use the internet at his place; even checking webmail is downright tedious! It is highly unlikely he’ll get cable high-speed any time soon, but there is “talk” about some sort of wireless access going to the local schools, and residents within 8km? of towers could get access. I hope it actually happens!

The ISP is Xplornet. Ashton is close to me, about maybe 20 Kms as the crow flies. Worth looking into.

Bonne chance.

Thanks! I sent her the info - looking up her postal code seems to suggest that they could get service from this provider. I’m sure she’d love this, if they can afford it! Looks like my FIL could get something too, but he’s really out in the middle of nowhere (Ashton is downright urban compared to where my FIL lives!) and it is much, much pricier. Still interesting to know there are options!

Yay! In a week you’ll wonder how you ever did without it. You’ll be able to watch moves, get software updates (Windows Update, Mac Update, Linux, whichever is your poison), listen to netradio…
