I FINALLY got to ride the hydrogen bus!

My city has a pair of hydrogen fuel cell buses from Mercedes-Benz. Truth be told, I’m a little dubious about the usefulness of hydrogen fuel cells, but the buses are a novelty, which makes them cool. We got them one or two years ago, but they’re elusive buggers that can only be seen disappearing over the horizon or pulling into another stand at the busport. Or, the were. Because today, as I was waiting for the bus to go home, I hear someone say:

“… Oh. We got the gay bus.”*

AND THERE IT WAS! Low-floored and plastered with decals, the hydrogen fuel cell-powered bus  It had a lot of standing room but very few seats. I thought it would do better as inner-city transport than a commuter bus, but hey.

Does your city have newfangled public transport?
Have you ridden it?

*Personally, I think it is bi.

Toronto has ordered 150 diesel-electric hybrid buses. They look and sound like other newish buses in the city, except that there is a low hump on the roof that apparently contains batteries. This hump has the words ‘Hybrid Electric’ on it. There are also several stickers around the bus, including one that says ‘electric powered’.

I have seen these buses on the road, and at Islington and Kipling subway stations, but I have not yet ridden on one, at least partly because the bus route that goes past my apartment gets mostly clunky middle-aged buses that are neither old enough or new enough to be cool.

Toronto’s transit system has been cash-starved for years, and they became very good at refurbishing old buses and streetcars (trams) for half the cost of buying new ones, so there are a fair number of classic old buses on the streets. I believe that they even sell this service to other transit systems.

We are currently fighting over the next generation of streetcars and subway cars, so maybe there will be cool new vehicles in the future.
