I finished Dune (the book) and I have some questions *spoilers!*

That’s actually not without precedent

Leto II The Elder

Well I know what I’m asking for, for Christmas. The Dune Encyclopedia. I actually read the whole series (plus the prequels). I have not read book 7 or 8. But I might, as the last book did leave a lot of unanswered questions.

I actually liked the stories in the prequels, although the writing style was abhorrent. Kind of like Dan Brown, only worse. But it certainly rounds out most of the major players well, including the Navigation Guild… as long as you look at it like fanfic. And I think the prequels do help to flesh out the conflict between the Emperor and the Atreides (or why the Emperor might be scared of that House despite no overt hostilities). They also provide good insight into Baron Harkonnen’s motivations in using his nephews, and why each may have been good for certain duties, while the other was not.

Be warned that the Dune Encyclopedia differs substantially from the prequels. It’s one reason I loathe the prequels so much…I encountered the DE a very long time before the prequels started to come out. Just remember that Frank Herbert, alive, approved the DE. Frank Herbert, dead, had absolutely nothing to do with the stuff his son put out.
