I fought some ignorance and won.

Friday at work I overheard my coworker telling someone one the phone that they should never drink distilled water. He claimed it leaches minerals from your body.

Bwuh? So, I went searching on the internet for this dangerous substance, and found some cites saying it was not true.

I then overheard him say that it dehydrates you because t has an extra oxygen molecule in it. So I IM’ed him the cited.

It was quite satisfying to hear him say “uh, I guess I was wrong, it looks like I had some bad information.”

So, yay for me.

Yay! It’s nice to know that somebody is out there, fighting the good fight.

Wow! Somebody made an erroneous assertion and backed down unequivocally (sounded like) when contradicted with a cite! We need more of these, to counteract the somewhat depressing Most Ignorant Thing You’ve Ever Heard thread.

Can I take a few tips from you? Because I tried to dispel a co-worker’s notion that if you swallow gum it stays in your digestive system for seven years - and she still didn’t believe me.

Co-worker, flapping her hand around dismissively: “Did you read that on the Internet? Yeah, we should believe everything we read on there.”

I guess you made the team. Here’s your cape.

Good for you, crazyjoe. The cape looks good on you, too.

Me? Oh, I’m still trying to earn mine.

I still haven’t managed to convince my family that there’s nothing special about pop can tabs. Can I stand next to you until your luck rubs off?
