I found an old (now expired) lottery ticket...do I scratch it?

Rip it up, throw it in the trash, and then light the pieces on fire.
Always leave 'em wanting

cough well…

[chanting] Scratch It! Scratch It! Scratch It! Scratch It! [/chanting]

Don’t scratch it.

If it’s a dud, you’ll throw it in the bin.
If it’s a winner, with remorse, you’ll throw it in the bin.

As there’s no upside, throw it in the bin.

I voted scratch it - but I now like Rachel’s idea more than anything I can imagine. Framing it is perfect - it’s already a loser (since you can’t redeem it for anything), so it serves no purpose but to create commentary - that’s what art is. Once you scratch it, it just becomes trash.

Ah, but your line of thinking is just a little too logical, and thus flawed when applied to human emotion.

Someone else pointed out upthread that the doubt itself has the capacity to cause remorse even though you don’t know whether it was a winner or not. Thus, since the chances are much higher that it’s not a winner, it’s worth it to scratch it to make that phantom remorse go away. You won’t have the lingering suspicion that you might have failed to cash in on a big winner anymore, and can go on with your life guilt-free.

SCRATCH IT, FOR CRAP’S SAKE! Gah, the suspense! Just DO it!

So you have an expired ticket? And it would make you feel better if you knew that, had you scratched it, you wouldn’t have won anything, anyway? That the ticket was worthless?.. Send it to me! I’ll scratch off the numbers, and I will guarantee you, yes, the ticket was worthless.
Because every lottery ticket I’ve ever held in my hand has proved to be a loser! I’ve never won so much as a dollar.

I scratched it, based on the response here.

I shouldn’t have…it won. I didn’t tell my wife, who still insists it should not be scratched.

 How much?
