I got a really good haircut!

No, there’s no need to call a press conference. In the grand scheme of things it’s not a big deal. And most certainly, it’s mundane and pointless, but I still wanted to share.

My hair is straight, fine, little body, and not inclined to look nice on its own. As a teen, I wanted a cascading mane of waves and curls. Instead, I had strings with split ends. Since those days, I’ve kept it short most of the time. When I go for a haircut (at the cheapie places - I’m not spending $60 for a haircut!!!) I generally tell the stylist I want it layered and no maintenance. I like to shampoo, towel dry, comb, and go. I hate the idea of fussing with hot rollers or mousse or gel or anything beyond shampoo, towel, and comb.

Lately, I’d been looking particularly unkempt. My last haircut wasn’t all that good, and as it grew out, it looked pretty ratty. It finally got to the point where I didn’t want to look in the mirror.

So I stopped at the place where my daughter got her hair permed last week. When it was my turn, I told Nancy what I wanted - my no-maintenance speech. She and I connected - she understood exactly what I want. And when she thought she was done, we both agreed that I needed a little more off the back.

I love what she did. It’s layered. It’s short but not too short. It doesn’t have that “just cut” look. And this morning, I showered, toweled, combed, and went. I need to take a series of pictures of my head. I need to carry them whenever I need a haircut so future stylists know what I want.

Wonder if I can persuade Nancy to move to Maryland??

Oh yeah - and no gray. Not bad for a 50-y/o!

Wouldn’t you know you’d find a good stylist right before you move. A good stylist is so hard to find. I second the picture idea. It’s much easier to show someone than try to explain what you want.

Happy Day!

Congrats! There is nothing more gratifying than knowing your hair looks good. (Okay, well, winning the Nobel Peace Prize, maybe – but it would be hard to choose.)

I’m one of those maniacs who does pay $60 for a haircut – but it looks good walking out of the salon, and it looks good every single day of the four months till the next haircut – and I’m another wash it, comb it, get the part straight, and let it air-dry gal.

With plenty of gray. Er, “natural highlights.”

Definitely take pics – from every angle. Either that or kidnap the stylist – if you had enough women on the jury, you’d get off.

OK, FairyChatMom, WHERE did you find Nancy? As I recall, until recently you lived in my approximate area (Central Jersey, SE PA)! And what did she charge?

Thanks!
Amy

Ah, Florida! Right next to Central Jersey…
Never mind <slinks away in embarassment> :o

I don’t believe it! There are other women out there who do the wash-and-go thing. Generations of hairdressers have refused to countenance this, and have tried to brand me unnatural for not wanting to spend hours every morning applying all kinds of gunk to my shiny, clean hair.

Congratulations, FairyChatMom on the haircut. I gave up and grew mine.

zephyrine, when I was in school, thru high school, I used to sleep every night with curlers in my hair in an attempt to give it body. Those years of torture convinced me to opt for the lowest possible maintenance style as I could get - just short of shaving my head. I got perms a few times, but that’s all behind me now.

As long as it’s not blocking my vision or maybe on fire, I don’t need to pay any attention to my hair any longer! YAY!

First of all FairyChatMom I think you should post the pics so we can all see and admire the new coiffure.

Second, speaking as one who’s been greying since before she turned thirty I’d just like to say PHFFFFFFFT! ::stamping feet:: It’s Not Fair!

Same here, though I grew mine because it was cheaper – I could get fewer cuts, even in those really awkward growing-out-the-layers stages. Even when I was about twelve and experimenting with mousse and stuff I could never get it to work, and gave up, since I hate the idea of spending all that time on my hair for everyday stuff. This also means I don’t have to wash my hair every day, which is good, because I think it would dry up and fall off my head if I did, conditioner or not!

FCM, we definitely want pictures!

I used to have short hair, and if I didn’t spend at least 45 minutes on it (washing, drying, curling, styling) it looked absolutely God awful.

Now my hair is almost to mid-back. I wash it, part it, dry it (cold weather) and go. Sometimes I put a little curl to the ends if I want to be ‘kicky’. Ha!
