I got crabs?!?

Bumping this. Went out a couple of times in the summer and got nutin’

Season re-opened last Saturday. I took my wife’s cousin, who is visiting from China. We got 5 red rocks and 2 Dungeness. Sunday struck out in the rain.

Went again this morning. Got a red rock in the first 5 minutes. Picked up 3 Dungeness 30 minutes later, got a kelp crab and another red rock a bit later. The homemade shrimp pots that my 12 year old made - one had serious shrimp mojo and the other not nearly so much. Nonetheless, managed to get a passel of small shrimp. Lunch was tasty.

Went by the local supermarket and they gave me a whole box of salmon and halibut bones with tons of meat on them. In China, a premium would be charged for people to make soup, and here the bones are simply thrown out. Got a dozen chicken legs as well on sale. So the crabs tomorrow will be enticed with salmon, halibut and chicken.

Cuz is heading back to Shanghai next Friday, so we’ll got out again tomorrow morning. Hopefully another good day to add to an overall dismal season.

I’m sure everything you say is true. But to me, crab has always been nothing more than a meal I order in restaurants. And I can say that even as just something to eat with no wider context, it’s still pretty damn good.

Tides are your friend. Went back today for the cousin’s last trip and took 2 of my bambinas. We got 12 red rocks and 2 Dungeness plus a bunch of shrimp. Talk about a good day.

I might hang it up for the season since I’m unlikely to come close to today’s haul (and the tides aren’t lining up very well).

Bumping this. Crab season opened yesterday at 6:00am. I was at the Edmunds pier with my oldest at 5:55. Fair amount of folks at that time of the morning, and about 2x by 6:15. Got 8 red rocks, 2 Dungeness and a kelp crab with one big claw. And I was at work by 10:00 after dropping the bambina off at her summer camp in Seattle.

Had a couple of families over and we split up the crabs plus grilled a bunch of meat on the new Weber.

The crab gods are fickle. Went out this morning for a repeat in Mukilteo. Sheesh, got one scrawny female Dungeness (have to throw back all females and anything under 6 1/4"). There was a big crew of crabbers and no one had a keeper and just a handful of throwbacks. It’s been unseasonably hot and dry here for the past 2 months, so not sure if that had anything to do with the shallower and warmer water at Mukilteo and lack of crab.

Ha! I saw the title and said “I have something to say about crabs!” and then saw that I already did…

Congrats on a successful first day!

You guys are lucky-here in NE, all we have are the Jonah crabs-tasty, but the claw shells shatter into a million pieces when you crack them-makes for a lot of bony bits in the meat.
