I mentioned in this thread that I was buying a yogurt maker. Well, it arrived about a week ago. It’s a nice looking little thing, small and compact, and fits in the corner of my counter. It was really easy to make yogurt in it, too.
First I filled my glass measuring cup with four cups of skim milk and stirred in a half cup of powdered milk, Kroger brand. I put it in the microwave for eight minutes. I took it out and tested the temperature – it was at 150 degrees F. I had to let it cool forever to have it reach 110.
Then I stirred into the milk, very gently, half a cup of plain yogurt. I poured this mixture into the yogurt maker and turned it on. Five hours later I had yogurt! dances
I had bought six little containers that held a cup of yogurt each. I put a little less than a tablespoon of apricot pie filling into the bottom of each container. Then I drained the whey off the yogurt and filled each container full. Then I put the containers in the refrigerator.
The yogurt is very flavorful. I think it is lighter in texture and sweeter than regular plain yogurt in the grocery store. However, it did produce a lot of whey, which I wasn’t expecting. And it looked lumpy, but those lumps broke down easily when I stirred the filling into the yogurt.
I have bought blackberry, strawberry, mixed berry, coconut, and sweet nut pie filling. I can’t wait to do it again, but I need to empty the containers before filling them again.
Experiment successful!
