Just wee little babies, not bigger than my thumbnail. I also got 5 Ghost Shrimp. Alas, one of the shrimp decided to play with the Pirahnas.
I had 3 Piranhas before that got to be about 2lbs each, but had to give them away when the kids started putting their fingers in the tank. Hopefully, I will have these new ones as long. Anyone else have predatory fish?
My mom says I was a piranha baby too…
I bit her when she tried to breastfeed me (one day old or so… hwo the hell did I manage to bite without teeth???)… after that I was a bottle baby… I also bit my dad s finger…
I have 2 Oscars Dr. Evil and Frau. I’ve had Dr. Evil for about 2 years (bought him when he was a wee pup) and bought Frau about six months ago to keep him company. They are great fish, but they’ve drawn human blood at least once.
I had six red belly piranhas when I lived in my old apartment. When I bought them, they were about the size of my thumbnail, but they grow very quickly in a large tank.
I fed them cichlid pellets for a while, and they were pretty tame. I’d stick my fingers in the tank with no problem. However, once I started feeding them hamburger and the occasional rodent I’d catch in the mousetrap, they started getting pretty vicious.
When they died, they were about the size of my hand. I stressed them out too much when I moved my tank into my next apartment. 'Twas a shame. They were great fish, and an awesome conversation piece.
Over the years, I’ve had the piranhas, pacus, oscars, arowanas, discus and just about any other tropical fish you’d care to name. IMHO, the most vicious were the oscars. I’d dump about 100 feeder minnows in their tank every once in a while, and the oscars would gorge themselves. They’d eat even when their stomachs were full. You could look into their mouths and see the minnows struggling to get out. Occasionally, one would manage to swim out of the oscar’s tummy and the oscar would chase right after the minnow again and gobble him up a second time. Fun for the whole family…
Fish in general are pretty cool. I recently put a 35-gallon hex tank in my office. I took my department to the aquarium and let them pick out fish from the community tanks. Folks from work will just come into my office and sit there, watching the fish swim around. It’s great.
