You’re in MPSIMS, so your PS is inappropriate. Don’t do this again.

Wow, well, I sympathise regarding your awful experience. However, it’s a single data point, which doesn’t justify your claim. Perhaps your experience behind bars adds to your opinion, but surely you see the confirmation bias there.

I have only a single, biased data point as well, so I can’t make any generalizations. For some years my mother was a court-appointed attorney in MI. She used to say “Perry Mason has it easy: his clients are all innocent!” I remember asking her how she could defend so many obviously guilty clients (like the one who was caught wearing 3 dresses, tags attached, while exiting a shop, who said she got an emergency phone call while trying them on … this before mobile phones.) She was quite clear: everyone deserves strong legal representation. Regardless of guilt, it’s the prosecution’s job to provide proof of guilt. The defendant needs to be carefully informed of his or her rights, responsibilities, and options. I remember stories where she went to great lengths to do what’s best for her clients, based on her clients’ choices (and often against her own best judgment).

No doubt there are plenty of court-appointed attorneys and public defenders who just phone it in, just as there are malingerers in any profession. It has to be difficult to maintain quality with the kind of customer feedback for that situation.

Um, what were we talking about?

Somehow, this thread caused this…
