And you know what else, it’s just going to get worse here now that they’re deciding what to do about the abortion laws.
What really pissed me off was when it was revealed that Catherine Nevin (for the non-Irish dopers, she was convicted earlier this year of having her husband murdered) had had an abortion. The tabloids ran with the story (screaming headlines: NEVIN HAD AN ABORTION as if that was yet more evidence of her evilness. Like there aren’t thousands of girls/women here who’ve made the same decision, and it’s not a decision you can make lightly in this country. It absolutely made me sick.
TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
Six months, 20 hours, 57 minutes and 30 seconds.
7354 cigarettes not smoked, saving $919.36.
Extra time with Drain Bead: 3 weeks, 4 days, 12 hours, 50 minutes.
As opposed to pro-choice, which doesn’t make implications about the opponent?
But we ARE in favor of the mother’s right to choose!
Yeah, and the pro-lifers are in favor of the baby’s right to life.
But it’s a fetus… it’s right to life is a fallacy.
Pro-lifers think the same thing about the mother’s right to choose-- a right to murder doesn’t exist.
The problem is that completely different world view. Both terms are technically true in the perspective of the peope using them. Both are emotionally loaded to make the opponent look bad. That’s politics.

who doesn’t give a fuck about abortion one way or another.
I feel the same way. I’m pro-life(ish), although not nearly as extreme as I once was. I do, ultimately, believe it is a woman’s decision…so I guess I’m…uh…pro-choice for life? I dunno. The whole thing just makes me sad.
What yanks my chain is when people go looking for me to say something they can react to and turn into a debate. A year ago, I started a thread about one messed up friend I was in the course of trying to sever ties with; she’s just bad news waiting to happen. She’d gotten pregnant and was likely getting an abortion; my concern was that she was going to think the friendship dissolved because of that instead of the ridiculous list of irresponsibilities, temper tantrums, the-world-owes-me attitudes that was chasing me away. Immediately a few Dopers jumped on my back for not being a “good friend,” how dare I judge her, etc…basicallly, making the exact same mistake I was concerned she would make regarding my decision for ending the friendship. I should never have said anything about being “pro-life;” some people heard what they wanted to and reacted accordingly. FWIW…I would never even consider ending a friendship over something so intensely personal as that.
Other issues I never bother discussing because of the endless circles of debate that swirl around them: **politics, religion, ** and gun control. I can’t stand people trying to proselytize me, whether it’s toward their faith (or lack thereof), their polictical party, or the NRA. I am an independent, dammit, in every sense of the word.
This is why I have ventured into Great Debates a whopping once since its creation, and then only because a MPSIMS thread linked to it. It just seems like a waste of intellect and temper.
Well, I’m sure if I just slap up a few more bumper stickers, everyone will change their minds.
I feel the same way about evolution debates. I used to enjoy slamming people down, and I still do every now and then, but it’s begun to feel like banging my head against the wall, which I don’t enjoy nearly so much.
I’m a single parent (male). In 1988, one of my daughters - aged 17 - decided to have an abortion. I went with her decision. Upon reaching the clinic, we found a number of demonstrators virtualy blocking the door. They were beyond rude and even had the very poor judgement to threaten us.
To make it short, the abortion was done and I have one less grand child than I might have.
I find the subject of abortion extremly distastful, but I firmly support freedom of choice.
Has anyone seen Citizen Ruth? A very funny move that pits pro-lifers and pro-choicers against each other and against the subject of their respective ministrations - a pregnant “huffer”. Although the movie tilts toward the pro-choice position, it skewers each side quite nicely, and should be mandatory viewing for anyone before they engage in an abortion debate.
Sounds like someone needs anger management, if a bumper-sticker elicits these types of feelings. And I bet you consider yourself one of the “tolerant” folks.
It irks me, even as an athiest, that Catholicism has become a one-issue religion. When’s the last time you heard somebody get passionate about the Nicene Orthodoxy? Consubstantiation? Nope, the Catholic Church is the anti-abortion church, and that’s all people talk about.
You know, a modern politician would not get away with being as vague on the issue of abortion as the bible is.
