Arthropods are not my friends. I like eating them and they apparently know it, so they go out of their little buggy way to creep me out. Luckily I live in dry, cold-in-the-winter Montana now, so about the worst I have to deal with are wasps and crickets and masses and masses of moths. It was worse in Missouri. There were roaches and millipedes as long as my arm.
The arthropods know how to invade my dreams, and they know how to make me wake up shuddering.
One night I dreamed I was touring around either Mount Vernon or Monticello again outside, walking along the paved pathways. There was someone along with me and the person was talking about how new forms of energy were being developed right there, including one that involved genetically engineered beetles. Then a big mass of beetles came along the path, kind of moving like dead leaves or moving along with dead leaves. The beetles looked like moths, only the ‘moth wings’ were the carapace which lifted and spread out to reveal big beetle wings. Massive, massive squick.
Another night I dreamed I was walking along the dirt road that leads to my house and listening to AM radio on my Walkman when I came upon a giant mass of grasshoppers, some of them huge. The small ones were OK and I’ve never been very creeped out by them, but the big ones were the size of large rats. They were huge. When they jumped, the electrochemical signals coming off their muscles caused noise in my AM radio reception! Insects should not need to register with the FCC!
You… you eat them? Please tell me you mean arthropods like lobster or crabs, not insects. shudder
I had this dream one time where I was in my house, and there was this effing gigantic cockroach running loose all over the place. Big as a deck of cards. I live in New Brunswick, and we just don’t get cockroaches around here, so I have no clue what triggered this dream, but it was nasty. In the dream, I chased the cockroach down and cornered it, then squashed it with the back of my hairbrush. Ewwwww. I really don’t know why I still remember this dream, probably because I hate insects so much it’s stuck with me over the past few years.
And a “big mass” of beetles that look like moths? I would have squicked myself awake!
Yes, lobsters and crabs. Although I did eat tiny ants when I was very young and who knows what insect parts make their way into various foods I eat. Plus the fact we’re all crawling with mites too small to see which probably get eaten inadvertently every so often. (Uh, sweet dreams to you, too. ;))
Gah. I hate roaches.
I did. Utterly disgusting.
It’s interesting, though: Intellectually I’m just fine with arthropods. I can think about them all day and look at pictures without any problems at all. It’s just getting close to them I don’t like.
