I hate my job. I mean really really hate it. I work all day talking on the phone selling DSL for a major telco. I am looking for other work but haven’t found anything yet.
Anyway the point is I need to find a way to deal with work and I was thinking about the movie Office Space. The main character gets hypnotized to not care about his work anymore with hillarious consequences. Is that possible? Could I be hypnotized to actually enjoy my work? Would it be worthwhile, dangerous, stupid?
Anyone have any experience with hypnosis to deal with your career?
INAhypnotist (although I wish) but I saw some hypnotist shows and you can get hypnotised for a long period of time after the show - and incredibly even after you realise you have been hypnotised you can still be under influence without knowing it.
Appartently it can help you quit smoking and quit other bad habits or gain good habits so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for your problem. However I think it will help you cope with it and doubt it will make you love and enjoy your job.
So I think it might work; at least for some time, and probably not as well as in Office Space (also, I wouldn’t recommend you acting like the guy in the movie because you’ll probably get fired - I still think the move was really good but I doubt you could gut fish on your desk and get away with it)
Also, some people can’t get hypnotised so it might not work for you- but maybe you should go to one of those hypnotist shows (and possibly participate), if it doens’t help you with your job it might at least cheer you up a bit…
Stage hypnotists, while using some of the techniques employed by psychologists/counsellors who practice hypnotherapy, are aiming to produce entertainment and may not be the safest place to look for hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy works by inducing a highly relaxed, trance like, state in which your mind is susceptible to new ideas. It’s a very broad field, and there is still plenty of research being done.
NLP practitioners use a similar techniques but focusing on language to introduce new ideas.
Googling for hypnotherapy reveals several sites which are worth looking at including http://www.hypnotherapysociety.com/ who say that they act as (In Britain)
It’s worth trying to find a similar organisation in your country, which has a registration system and holds practicioners accountable.
Could it help you to love your job? maybe. Could it help you to stop hating your job? probably.
And it can probably be used to help you find a new job, that you will enjoy, which is probably a better idea.
I do have training in hypnosis-- and I don’t think I’d be able to convince you to love your job without a lot of work. I’d need to know exactly what about your job you dislike, and why you dislike it, in order for this to be effective. And even then, it’d be a piss-poor solution.
Hypnosis can be a great aid to therapy, but it seems like your best alternative is to get a job/career that you enjoy.
I’ve been hypnotized and done a little hypnosis myself. There is a difference between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Stage hypnosis will not make any difference.
As for hypnotherapy, I really can’t say if it will work for you. It is a lot of work though. It involves many sessions (I believe 10 is about typical) of varying length and may require you doing some self-hypnosis, reliably.
My opinion is that you’d be better off spending all that time and money looking for a different job.
