I hate Rush

Rush sucks. Neil Pert sucks. He couldn’t find the beat with both hands. He has never rocked an ass in his life. I don’t give a flying crap if you can do 64th and 128th note rolls if you can’t write a song. Geddy Lee sucks. He’s a pretentious showoff wanker. You want to hear a real bass player, listen to Mike Watt both pre and post Minutemen. And what’s the other guy’s name? The wheedly-whee guy? Who cares? He sucks! Just like his band.

I hate Rush.

Hate. Them.

Funny that you should bring that up, Alex, the guitar player for Rush said something very similar in an interview. Although he can play very fast, he rarely does

Well, rush songs are usually very complex, so there is not a lot of room for improvising…But they are written with a great deal of feeling and imotion. I saw them live not to long ago to a packed house, and the performed Natural Science
The entire crowd, a sea of people stood in awe, absolutely motionless, through the entire song(and its a long one). The energy and feeling of that song was incredible, and yes, it was pretty much the same as on the album…But seing it performed live was almost a religious experiance. Rush is not the same kind of band as the RHCP…If they were perform everything exactly the same, it would be boring.

If it is considered crass to come into an appreciation thread and piss on the object of the OP’s love, should it also be frowned upon to defend the honor of the object of the OP’s ire in a specificially “I Hate” thread?

Ringo Starr is the best drummer in the known universe. He is the Human Metronome.
I can not stand Rush, they may be technically superior and masters of their instrument but they are not talented, merely skilled. I’m sure they’d be an amazing cover band playing the works of talented people.

gex gex, what follows must be the most pointless “me, too!” post of all “me, too!” posts.

But, yeah, me too! I have had people tell me Rush is a brilliant band, incredible instrumentalists. Beyond that, and that they are classified as ‘prog rock’, I know nothing of them. And I’ve been known to listen to the '60s/'70s/'80s stations around here.

I think as a violinist and classical music aficianado, you learn very quickly that a mere technical grasp of the music is not enough to involve or otherwise entertain an audience. Young virtuosos need time to understand the music, to feel it. Without that, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E is just a combination of notes, no matter how intricate. You end up respecting the composer much more than the performance. Perhaps this is what Rush does to people as well, involves them in the techincalities but not any emotion that may be present in the music?

Rush fans, would I do well to start with the albums handsomeharry mentions at the start of the page? And will it be anything beyond an intellectual exercise? (I don’t really mind intellectual excercises (I respect–not enjoy, but respect–Philip Glass and John Cage, for example), but I want to know what to expect.)

Well, IANAM, but that was why I hated Rush- I thought they were too technical, too cold. But as I aged, I began to see that passion didn’t have to involve wailing vocals and a sense of urgency; passion could be expressed through precision and control. It’s passion reflected upon in tranquility if you will.

I love Rush now.

I don’t know, bristlesage, me being NAM and all I feel that life’s too short to listen to music you just don’t like.

Damn.

I thought I was in the "Defenders of Rush thread.

Carry on hating and at.
