Another good example is Sarah McLachlan’s song ‘Good Enough’. I think she’s great, and the song sounds great too. But the lyrics sort of flit around from one possible character or point of view to another, and I find it a little off-putting.
Paul McCartney was guilty of this early in his career, with the otherwise wonderful “And I Love Her”… the verses refer to her in the third person, but the bridge has the lyric “A love like ours will never die as long as I have you near me”. (He could just as easily have made it “… have her near me”.)
