I sympathize. I’ve had at least the ghost of a mustache since I was 13 and have never shaved my upper lip. Ever. I’ve been wearing a beard for maybe the past 15 years and don’t really anticipate ever losing that either. I’d feel unnatural without facial hair.

I spent years working in jobs where some corporate assholes decided I shouldn’t have a beard or long hair or wear whatever bullshit they could dream up. I didn’t like the way I looked either but I wasn’t too stupid to change my appearance so that I could acquire or continue employment.
People look at you when you pick up or fill out an application. Maybe you should have listened to those people who suggested you shave about 299 applications ago.

I don’t think you fucking get it. All the unskilled stuff is filled with people with less qualifications than myself. I am “overqualified” for the positions and they feel I’d move on as soon as something better cropped up. This is bullshit code for: We can pay that kid with the GED less. The meager openings that are available in the areas I’m skilled in require extensive experience that I do not possess. I could work around that, but without exception every position in my immediate area requires bi-lingual status to be considered. I’d be willing to extend my commute, but not for minimum wage, as the tolls and gas will eat most of the money I’d make at such a rate.
Currently, central florida is going through one the worst unemployment rates it has ever experienced. Over 70,000 people are out of work here locally, most of them like myself; collage grads with degrees in non IT or medical fields. The rest are the skilled tradesmen who made their living on the housing boom. The service sector is over flooded with applicants, and since business sucks ass right now, there is a hiring freeze going on.
Muffin, Once you’ve applied at most places, they save your application in the computer system and you can’t input another as it is tagged to your social. Those apps have pretty much covered all the places advertising as well as those business that are corporate backed and always accepting applications. Hell, in downtown there are business putting out signs that say “sorry, we are NOT accepting applications at this time”. Usually I spend about 2 hrs online utilizing the various job hunting sites, and go out physically twice a week, all day. Doing more than that hasn’t been productive and has cost too much money in gas and incidentals.
Deaths in both mine and Nashiitashii’s families and the accompanying paperwork, chores, etc ate up a good month of time. Occasionally, I take a day off or had some contract work as well so I was not actively looking at that time.

I mean, if only I’d known that literally every single job in your area requires Spanish language capabilities I could’ve suggested the most logical thing for you to do earlier, which is to curl up into a ball in a corner somewhere and cry yourself to death.

Well, to be fair, those immigrants are stealing jobs which are rightfully the OP’s, via their sleazy willingness to work at a higher productivity/cost ratio and their underhanded possession of such additional locally desirable skills as knowledge of Spanish. Not only that, but they have the further gall to bring this latter aspect of work home with them, Latinoing up the damn place with their unconscionable practice of conversing in a different language than the OP’s own mother tongue. I have no problem with legal immigrants. They worked hard to get here, they pay their taxes, try their best to learn the native language, and bust ass. I have Mexican immigrants in my immediate family, my grandparents immigrated from Russia and Nahiitashii’s mother was also an immigrant from Iceland. I have a major problem with illegal ones who are eating up all the labor base availability, and forming an insular cultural enclave and retarding their assimilation into the greater society.
Anecdotal example: my next door neighbor David is a legal immigrant. he and his family are nice people; we work out together do bbq’s, etc. He moved in about a year ago and his two young children spoke both English and Spanish with equal fluency. In an effort to help his family, he’s allowed his sister, her husband, and their children to share the house. None of them are legal, and none have visas. David found them work by vouching for them to his foreman, who apparently doesn’t care to check too much into things. Now, none of the children speak English, and neither do any of the other family members other than David and his wife. He is frustrated by the situation too.
This plays out over and over again here with increasing frequency. Another friend of mine teaches E-sol classes at the local highschool and community college. She has had a steady and dramatic increase in her failure rate over the last few years.
She even has a small group of Lebanese kids who now speak Lebanese and Spanish, but no English.
I could give two flying fucks WHERE they came from. I could care less if it was Spanish, Russian, Creole, Japanese, Swedish, Pakistani, or Gaelic. It isn’t the only thing keeping me from employment by any measure, but it doesn’t help; and anyone who can’t admit that is being more than a little deliberately obtuse.
It only makes good business sense for employers to demand fluency when the customer base is heavily weighted to one language group. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t suck, and I don’t have the right to bitch about it.

Your ideas are just wrong and stupid. First of all, undocumented immigrants did work hard to get here (risked their lives in many cases), DO pay taxes, and I don’t think immigration status has fuck all to do with whether someone learns the language and assimilates or not. I know undocumented workers well on their way to being fluent in English*, and yet my friend’s Italian grandmother who has been here for SIXTY YEARS refuses to speak a word of it.
And by the way, Spanish is considered by the vasy majority of people to be far easier to learn than English, so instead of pitching a hissy fit, why don’t you get started? They’re not going away.
*In fact a friend of mine is “illegal”, owns a house, pays taxes, has a good white collar job, and probably speaks better English than you.
I didn’t claim you have a problem with all immigrants. I think your problem with immigrants who prefer to use the Spanish language (“Fuck them again for turning this area so latino that you must be bi-lingual or a native speaker to find employment near the house.”) is asinine enough.
You’re right; it doesn’t help keep you employed. But it’s not as if the immigrants have done something morally objectionable by happening to prefer services you can’t provide…
