I have a cold and can't take anything for it! :(

My lovely little munchkin gave me the cold she caught from her great grandmother.

Alas this is how life with little 'uns progresses. The main complaint here is that while she’s sleeping the sleep of the innocent. Breathing semi-freely with the aid of antihistamines. I am sitting in a room filled with vicks vapo steam with a huge box o tissues.

I’d love some benedryl but have been dutifully informed that taking any such snot clearing remedy would be detrimental to the munchkin-to-be brewing away in my belly.

So come one… come all… regale me with your sympathy, your stern reprimands to buck up, and your old wives tales of tried and true non teratogenic cold remedies

Echinacea. I’m a recovering addict so can’t take decongestants or antihistimines, but I swear on the herbal stuff. I go through this entire winter without a cold – the one time I felt one coming on, I knocked it back with echinacea.

It’s probably too late, though – you’re better off taking it when you feel the first ticklings of symptoms.

There are plenty of herbal remidies you can take as well as Tylonol (sp?). Also ask your doctor about Sudafed.
Also, be sure to be hydrating yourself. Juice, hot tea with lemon, ect.
Now my wife, who is pregnant with our 6th says you can Benedril, so ask again.
Hope you fell better.

chicken soup has actually been studied and found to be helpful for colds…although any warm soup or liquid is beneficial with congestion. so herbal teas are probably good under the same rubric.

standing in a warm shower tends to help me when i’m clogged up.

i’m also a firm believer in slathering a heapin’ helping of Vicks on my chest at night and putting a flannel rag over it for covering (combination keeps the warmth and vapors close / keeps the stuff from rubbing off on everything else).

if your store/drug store carries a big selection of herbal teas or remedies, there’s a label called Traditional Medicinals that makes two tea formulas that might be helpful. one is called Breathe Easy – but it does contain a caution on the label regarding pregnancy or nursing, “consult a health practitioner trained in medical herbalism beforew using this product.” :dubious: they also have another version (which i don’t have on hand here) named something like Gypsy Cold Remedy or somesuch. my guess is the same disclaimer would probably apply. but at any rate, they don’t taste bad.

sympathies with the stuffies. since i have developed sinus problems after living in the DC area for several decades (as so many people seem to do), i can empathize with the dreariness of it all.

sore throats and tickly coughs respond well to a mixture of cider vinegar and honey…but best avoid if you’re still getting nausea.

red tiger balm makes a nice change from the smell of vicks if you want to mix it up a little.

other than those two gems, i’m at a loss.

but i hope you feel better soon, and once again congrats on the babba.

I was told that being in the first trimester was what killed my medicinal options. Too much delicate stuff happening in these weeks.

I never think of the herbal remedies… I’ll have to see about the Tylenol. I usually can’t take it with the prescriptions I usually have … those too are suspended for the pregnancy so maybe I can take it now.

I’ve been drinking lots of water and juice… yum tea with a little honey… must get hubby to run to the store. Not sure I could stomach the cider vinegar. That’d be a chugger not a sipper if I did try!

I’ve always been a vicks slatherer too. Praise be for the little ones they have mentholated patches to stick on their chests no mess! My poor hubby will be all vicks-ed out by the time this is over

Thanks!

If you have a sinus headache, put Vicks right on your face. I am not kidding.

If all the lemon juice starts to give you a tummyache, have some gingersnaps.

Make hubby rub your temples. And your feet. And … whatever.

Warm lemonade is great for an itchy throat! Try making it with hot water, lemon juice and honey. The hotter the water the better. Just sip it every time you get the need to cough - which is probably often.

Remember, the more liquids you get in you, the faster you get better. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but that’s what my mom says!

No fun! Sending warm thoughts your way!

A cold is a virus… best thing is too keep warm and hydrated and keep lots of hankies beside you at all times. Drink and eat what you want and rest a lot…

And, sorry to tell ya, but I’m now 2.5 weeks with my cold :frowning:

Rhino’sHoney! ugh 2 and a half weeks! I hope you’re starting to come out of the worst of it!

Right now I’m sitting in what my hubby has dubbed the vicksmosphere. I have water, OJ, tissues, dinner, cough drops and a laptop. Guess I’m just gonna have to ride it out. I already have a rudolph nose! Just hope it doesn’t progress to sinus infection.

Thanks for the wellwishes everyone!

I’ve been flogging Breath-Right strips on these boards for months…I swear by them. They are adhesive strips that you apply to the outside of your nose, and they gently pull out the sides of your nostrils. The swollen membranes are separated and bingo! you can breath again. All without the aid of medications. Try them, trust me.
