I have a cold. What should I eat?

“Normal” food often sends my symptoms into overdrive. Of course there’s chicken n. soup, which I eat dutifully, but it tastes so bland (Campbell’s c.n.s. is terrible).

I was thinking of doing an all juice and water fast, along with taking multivitamins…is this in any way a bad idea?

What do you eat when you have a cold?

Vary the juices as much as you can. I’ve been drinking a lot of grape juice lately, I’d forgotten how incredibly rich and satisfying it tastes. With all the extra liquids you’re imbibing, you’ll be excreting a lot of vitamins and minerals, so a multi and some extra C IS a great idea. Throw in a sports drink too, if only for the psychological value. Herbal teas are good, chamomile is one of my favorites. Sometimes plain crackers or dry toast is all I can stomach. Can you play the sick card on a good friend to get you some real chicken soup. return the favor when it’s their turn. Oh yeah, gee I’m sorry you got the sniffles, take care of yourself now, you hear.

Apple cider (or juice), warmed. Mmmmm. Rice pudding. Some other kind of soup; minestrone or other veggie soups are easy to make, or chicken barley. I make great borscht. That’s what I’d eat, anyway.

Get real chicken noodle soup–either homemade or another brand (Progresso is somewhat better).

Just about any tea will be beneficial for you–herbal or otherwise.

Hot meals and especially hot soup are generally a Good Thing ™ when dealing with a cold.

Juice and water, as you apparently know already, are good ideas as well.

Sports drinks should have more than a psychological benefit–the salt (“electrolytes”) in them will help your body process more water, methinks (this is the reason the salt is there for sports uses).

If you have throat signs, a spoonful of manuka honey may be beneficial (I know I always get a very irritated throat from the post nasal drip if i have a cold).

Otherwise, anything with Vegemite.

Another voice for chicken soup. But not Campbells condensed. Buy a ready-to-eat soup, like the Campbells Home Cooking soup, or Progresso. Or ideally, make it yourself.

Vegemite and Marmite are loaded with B-vitamins, so phraser’s idea is a good one, too.

Lots of fruit juices and sports drinks like Gatorade.

And steamed green leafy veggies, like spinach, or sweet pea shoots. Hey, it works for me.

Nyquil & Donuts…sure cure!

I usally eat smothing spicy (as in hot). This is becouse spicy food seem to work as a natural decongestant.

Some people say milk makes your symptoms worse by thickening the mucous in your nose and throat. I don’t know if there’s any proper evidence one way or the other, but if you notice that happening to you, try to stay away from dairy products.

Soup and teas are good. The warmth loosens things up and relieves the symptoms for a little while. Fluids are important. Other than that, eat whatever appeals to you. Like netscape 6, I’m partial to spicy foods when I’m stuffed up - they get my nose running and declogging, and they actually taste like something. My sister, on the other hand, used to live on jelly toast when she had a cold - don’t know if her tastes have changed now that she’s grown.

Mrs. Grass chicken soup is my cold cure. Don’t let the fact that it comes in a box fool you. This is the best chicken soup you can get without making it fresh. I can’t stand any of the canned stuff when I am sick. The noodles are too mushy. With this stuff you cook the noodles when you make it. The flavor is 100 times better than Campbell’s.

Get thee to a chinese restaurant! Hot tea and extra spicy Hot and Sour Soup. It has everything you need - plus it clears the sinuses!!
