Of bringing a product to market. I have an idea. I think it would sell. I’d prefer to license, manufacture and market the product myself, figuring that I wouldn’t get nearly the money if I merely sold the idea to a company that sells related merchandise.
My question to Dopers - has anyone else done this? How expensive is it to obtain a patent? I understand there are lawyers involved - does one need to have engineering-type specs before seeing the lawyer? Any other tips or hints?
Don’t take all your advice from a website that’s trying to sell you something.
A lot of people reccomend that you don’t get a patent unless you know you can make at least $50000 on the idea. The process is either expensive or time consuming, depending how you go about it.
The book “Patent It Yourself” from Nolo Press is really good at describing not only how to patent it yourself, but if you should patent it. Your local library should have a copy, and they recently released an updated version.
Thank, Wikkit - One website linked by jacksen9’soffered “marketing research” for a fee of about $200. They did say that only about 8% of the people that came to them for advice were given a favourable report. And they don’t sell any other service, so they don’t draw you in and try to soak you for more later.
