Our son’s hedgehog is in my hair. Our youngest son got him out and gave him to me. He pooed on me 4 times now he is nesting in my hair. He is sitting on my shoulder, biting at my hair I guess. He was gently clawing at my head, he did get rid of a good itch for me! Just had to share.
Until I opened this thread, I just assumed you were using an unusual metaphor in the title.
Nope, he likes to crawl in my hair.
He’s funny that way.
Pictures. I demand pictures…
pic of “sonic” in our son’s hands
didn’t get a pic of him in my hair, maybe later.
That is the cutest thing ever. How good a pet are they?
Aren’t pictures required in kitten threads? Because her name is badkittypriestess…
Does that mean she must provide pics in every thread she posts to???
They are quiet for the most part unless you get them a wire wheel and it squeeks all night. (the wheel has very small squares so his feet won’t get stuck) They can live in a metal bottomed cage lined with newspaper, they eat high quality cat food. (Iam’s work) Hard food that is. They do hiss when they get scared and their spikes come up but we absolutely love him. He will also hide his head when he feels scared/threatened. They poop a lot and the wire/metal bottom cage needs to be cleaned out at least weekly. He has an igloo to be in and he won’t use his “Potty” to do his business in. I highly recommend one for a pet!
Uh… actually, they’ve come up with better food for hedgehogs than cat food. These days, current thinking is that you buy them specialized hedgehog kibble instead of cat food, which doesn’t have the right balance of nutrients.
I know, because I used to have a hedgehog myself, until Mr. Cranky Pants passed away a few months ago from cancer. He was almost 5, which is pretty ancient in hedgehog years.
I bought the kibble online in five pound bags, and froze it until he needed it. Lasts an amazingly long time when you consider that you basically feed them a couple **teaspoons ** of the kibble a day. Other hedgehog owners have fed theirs assorted treats, including mealworms (mm! yummy!) but Mr. Cranky Pants never took to them.
The link to their site is here, and my local exotic animal vet gave the brand his stamp of approval, so I always used it. I’ve never had any complaints with the manufacturers, other than that their website could use a better graphic designer.
Also, I would point out to any prospective owners that hedgehogs are pretty sensitive to temperature, and usually need a heat lamp to stay toasty – I had to keep a closer eye on him in the wintertime – in the summertime he was fat and happy.
There’s a Hedgehog FAQ online, which contains an amazing amount of information when I looked at it a while back. I strongly encourage anyone thinking about a hedgehog to read it from end to end before getting a hedgie. Usenet Hedgehog FAQ It’s apparently not been updated in a while, but the information is still there.
Anyway – yes, hedgehogs can be wonderful pets, but they’re nothing like guinea pigs or hamsters. Oy. There’s a reason mine was named Mr. Cranky Pants.
I have a hedgehog nested in my hair.
She has a hedgehog nestled in her hair.
He seems very happy there.
His pooing causes no dispair.
It seems like he and I are quite a happy pair.
So cute! I’ve had guinea pigs, rats, and mice, but never a hedgehog, though I’ve often wanted one. My piggies and rats loved to crawl around in my hair. Unfortunately, I have a lot of it and it’s extremely curly, so they’d often get stuck. It’s not very fun to try to pick a panicking rodent out of your hair as it’s wiggling around, getting more tangled, and yet they’d do it every time I gave them the free reign to get onto my shoulders. :smack:
I’m so jealous of you. I’ve wanted a hedgehog for years. I even have a name picked out for when I do get one. It’s one of those things on my Before I turn 30 Goal List.
Gah, I keep reading your title and getting these lyrics in my head:
If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow
Don’t be alarmed now
It’s just a spring clean for the May Queen
Sonic is cute. Thank you for sharing.
Jim
Please do!
After looking through your animal pictures and coming across this, I have to ask: Are those really, really big guinea pigs, some other species that just resembles giant guinea pigs, or do you have a very tiny family?
I assume you are a fan of the Sega Genesis? Oh such sweet memories.
Their not HUGE “Choco” is the brown one and he is very hairy and the white one is “Marshmallow” maybe it’s the way the camera angle is??? Dunno
Yep!
We still have ours but our boys don’t play that game anymore. We like to play the “Grinch” instead.
bobotheoptimist and I laughed so hard! I needed this after a baaad day. I laughed so hard I went into a coughing frenzy!
