I’ve been out of work for four months. I’ve been sending out résumé after résumé, but there is little work for mainframe-based data management analysts up here. So I applied for a clerk’s position with the County Auditor’s office.
I went down to the courthouse last Friday and took a test: 10-key, data entry and typing. I passed! I have an interview this Friday. It’s going to be a panel interview. I wonder what it will be like? I imagine a scene like in Coupling where Jeff is being interviewed by a few people. I had my choice of times for the interview, and I chose three in the afternoon. I’d heard a report on the radio that said that people who perform last generally get higher marks than people who perform first. I hope it’s the same way for interviews.
It wouldn’t be a great job. It pays just slightly more than my last one, and a bit more than half of the job before that. Still, it’s for the County. I think those jobs tend to be fairly secure. And it will leave my weekends free for filmmaking.
I still wonder what the interview will be like. They know I can 10-key, enter data, and type to their standards. Maybe it’s just to gauge my personality? (If so, I may be in trouble! )
I have no idea what a panel interview will be like. I only had one with the DEA when I was coming out of college (they wanted nothing to do with me and they told me as much before the hour was over). I seriously doubt the county auditor is going to be anything like a DEA interview, so I won’t scare you with the details.
Good luck to you! You know the job requirements, so be confident. You’ll be a great asset to them.
Good luck, Johnny! I have been interviewed by a panel, but, since it was the company’s entire IT department, it was more of a gang interview. I’d say it’s a good thing. It’ll give you a chance to see how you’ll fit in with the whole organization. I figure having more people there should also lessen the chance of one person’s particular biases working against you. Act confident, relaxed, and competent, but you already knew that.
I arrived about 20 minutes early. A few minuts past the appointed time, I was taken into a small room where I was interviewed by three women. I was nattily dressed in a charcoal-black suit, light blue shirt, and a nice tie. I felt I was confident; and I answered all of their questions well, I think. The Auditor seemed to be please by my answer as to how I would handle a customer who needed help using the computer, dealing with a ringing telephone, and another walk-in customer at the same time. I should find out if I got the job by Friday next.
In the meantime, I have another application to fill out for a clerk’s position for the County Treasurer.
