I suspect that there is some confusion, here. The Septuagint did translated Hebrew almah to Greek parthénos, changing the clear denoted value of the passage of Isaiah from “young woman” to “virgin.”
Dawkins’s statement that the idea of the virginity of Mary was a “late interpolation” needs a bit more nuance. If by “late” he means that the idea was not considered either real or important in the years immediately following the life of Jesus, he may very well be correct. On the other hand, there is no evidence that some later author inserted that relevant passage into the Gospel of Matthew, (who was quite capable of wringing the least bit of foretelling out of the most innocuous passages of the Hebrew Scripture–as seen through the lens of the Septuagint).
So the concept of the virgin birth appears to have begun circulating in the Christian community no more than about sixty years after the life of Jesus (and may have occurred earlier, although we have no documentary evidence for it). Whether that is a “later interpolation” depends on where one defines “early” and “late” and what one considers an interpolation.
However, there is no mainstream Christian tradition that denies the virgin birth, even among those groups that view it as a “wonder story” instead of a historical recitation.
