And I don’t know what to do. My cat Dickens caught a mouse. It’s still breathing.
I don’t want to kill it. I have no place to put it. It’s very cold outside. And it can’t live in a sock.

Oh, my. I’m not in any way an expert (I’m sure one will be by in a moment), but is there a sheltered spot outside where you could put the mouse? Or, can you create such a spot?
Mostly I wanted to come in and wish you luck.

It is a wild animal and if you put it outside in a sheltered area it will be fine as long as the cat didn’t injure it too badly. It just came in the house because the house is warm and there maybe is food there. Probably the best thing to do is let it outside and let nature run it’s course.
You could give it a little advantage by giving it a box, letting it keep the sock, maybe giving it a handful of oatmeal or a little peanut butter when you let it go.
You really shouldn’t keep wild animals as pets. [channeling Mom]Any wild animal can carry disease and/or fleas[/Mom]. If you choose to keep it, it’s really not likely to be a cuddley pet mouse. It’s going to be something that lives in a cage that you can’t interact with because you scare the Dickens out of it.
A mouse in a sock wold be the ultimate cat toy for my two furry fiends.
Shake the mouse to the bottom of the sock, grab the sock at the top, step outside and swing the sock around and around and around and then release it at the apex of the rotation and then go back inside think warm thoughts about America’s first Mousetronaut.
I put it outside in a little box with the sock and a stale granola bar I fished out of the trash can.
I have no idea how badly hurt it was. It was lying very still, but still breathing.
Good luck, mousie! Remember, this is the House of Horrors!
I agree with Dreamy. Nadia routinely caught mice and I released them into the garden. Once he beat me back to the house.
From your profile it’s 26 F. He will be okay with shelter in a wood pile or the like.
I’m picturing a bad release where it hits the side of the house three feet away.
That’s why you need a couple socks and a couple of mice. It does take a while to get the hang of it.
