I Have A Thermal Imager!

And it is awesome!

It is the FLIR One that plugs into my iPhone, is tiny, and actually images long wave IR. UPS delivered it yesterday and the first thing I did was look up at my ceiling. I now know exactly where all the studs and firebreaks are located since I can see them right through the drywall. Even more useful was finding all the hot spots and an entire section that is uninsulated. This thing is sensitive to very small differences in temperature: I can see my cat’s heat foot prints on the floor as she walks away from me, her annoying cohabitant.

Right now it is a nifty toy, but this thing is the real deal. I have experience using very expensive thermal imagers in the military and while this thing is nowhere near as high grade, it is a genuine thermal imager. My house is going to get more efficient. And my cat is going to be the star of cool videos.

Yes they are indeed fun. Try aiming it a vehicle that has recently been running, or you chair after you stand up, or your own bare footprints.

Also take it outside on a cool night. You may see animals but may also see stuff like power transformers glowing red.

I remember using one of them in architecture school. People heat up in the most interesting places when they become embarrassed…

Wow, I had no idea how powerful these can be. I wish there was a google-glass type version I could wear into negotiations!

This sounds awesome! About how much was it? Do they make them for Android?

FLIRs are awesome! My last job had one of the expensive cameras. Of course, the first thing we did was point them at each other. Turns out one of my co-workers got proof that she has circulation issues in her hands.

At my current job, we were looking at thermal cameras and I remember seeing the FLIR One on their website. I understand that they have an Android version in the works. When it’s released, I may well have to buy one. Enjoy your new toy! Just remember, whatever you see with it, you can’t un-see.

I borrowed a Klein Tools TI250 from my son. The cat was the first thing I took a picture of (no video). My pitch black basement with the furnace and water heater running is an amazing sight.
