I have angered the Windows gods somehow...

And verily, they have decreed that I shalt not indulge in my SDMB fix daily.

For I have commited the cardinal sin of rebooting whilst the Holy Reliquary of Gates was in the midst of its tribulation that required me to exert my patience whilst it performed the Hang/Freeze ritual during the opening of it’s Hallowedness.

Verily I have transgressed, and the wrath of mighty Bill of Gates has descended upon my prostrate form for my sinfulness.

I am beset by the plagues of the infernal computational machine. I am forced to enter the Sepulcher of Windows through the untainted device known as ‘Safe Mode’. The champion known as Autoexec.bat has been reduced to a single line reasin “echo OFF”. and most greviously, the normal entrance to the Shrine of Windows has been closed to me. My sole vision as I am refused entrance, is the exit screen, mocking me with the message “It is now safe to shut off your computer”

I have gone astray from the proper path fellow Dopers! Will some Messiah versed in the lore of the venerated Windows Code please impart their seraphic knowledge to this lowly pilgrim who seeks only to be freed of the plagues and restored to the glory that is the Dope?

Amen.

Coles-notes version: My computer is FUBAR. I can only open windows in safe mode. If I try to open in normal mode, It instantly shows the shut down screen and turns off. My autoexec got erased except for the one line. I also cannot refresh my OS with my recovery CD as it tells me my HDD is full (when it quite clearly has 10 Gbs free  ) when it starts creating backups.

I am at a lost. I have tried every solution I can think of, yet nothing works. Does anyone out there know what might be the problem and how I might be able to fix it? Please?

Teegus

P.S. Yay for dictionary.com and thesaurus.com

P.P.S. I am posting this from my 2nd computer. No internet on the wanked one. Nor can i transfer my files in the event of a format :frowning:

So… no one can help me? Am I totally SOL?

<insert piteous wailings>

:stuck_out_tongue:

I think it’s Bills way of telling you to upgrade to XP

What I would is boot-up in safe mode.
Copy everything you want to keep to CD/Zip/Floppy.
Format your HD.
Reinstall Windows.

If all else fails for transferring files, you can remove your HD and install it as a slave on your other comp, then transfer the files you absolutely need to save (unless your 2nd comp is a laptop)

Good thinkin FBG! or buy another HD and install windoze and then plug in your old one as a secondary. Of course thats more $$$.

A former lurker now stands up…

Well Teegus, which Windows?
I think i can help ya with your problem…
IF it’s a Windows 9x/Me.
If it’s, please do the following:

Enter windows safe mode.

Then open the windows explorer.

Go into your windows folder.

Find the Sysbckup folder (It’s usually hidden, but you can easily see it by changing the folder’s view options on windows explorer config…)

Well, what do you see?
Some rb###, right?

Well, pick one of them (minus the Rbbad, kinda obvius :P), view its properties and choose the OLDER one (or any of them which has a date when your pc was working alright…) now do EXTRACT it into your WINDOWS folder, and overwrite the files he asks you to.

(It will be 4 files, and they are: system.dat, system.ini, user.dat, win.ini)

Now restart your PC.
Let it enter the windows automatically… then a blue screen will pop up and tell you thet the system is using some sort of backup bla bla bla… It will ask you to restart your pc once again.

Restart.

Now… there ya go
If it’s a Win9x/Me problem it really should solve your problem buddy, dunno if it works on a Win2k/Nt too, but i guess its worth a try anyway.
Man do i feel dumb with my REALLY bad english… (I’m from Brazil and do speak only portuguese…)
