Often times, you start reading their drivel and lose faith in humanity and sometimes want to claw your own eyes out. But after all these years I have discovered a trick that will put their viewpoints in proper perspective.
Just play this while reading.
It’s surprising how well it works. You are welcome, for once, bbq has been gifted with a positive light.
I still read Breitbart and FoxNews online – as well as idiot conservative opinions on this site – because I’d hate to be in an info bubble. Unfortunately, this creates its own bubble when I recognize that this stuff is generated by idiots.
I tend to stay away from the conservative on-line sites, but I have to confess that one of my favorite things is turning on the Rush Limbaugh show, listening for three or four minutes, then shutting off the radio mid-Rush-rant.
It’s funny because conservatives are illiterate hillbillies.
An old rule of propaganda, or public relations if you like, is that you shouldn’t portray your enemy as stupid or clownish. If you lose to them, what does that say about you? There’s also no glory in defeating a lesser opponent. Instead you say they’re clever and resourceful, so if you lose there’s no shame and you can rally the troops to fight again another day. If you win you’ve proved yourself by besting a worthy foe.
Plus, the people who craft the arguments that make you grind your teeth are well educated business executives, lawyers, and think tank academics, the sort of people who also look down on hillbillies. The conservatives you argue with on the internet are most likely suburban professionals. People like Curtis Yarvin, Richard Spencer, and Stefan Molyneux are all college educated and deploy grand historical narratives to support their ideologies. If you look for them you can find right wing backwood militia type websites, but they tend to mostly keep to themselves as far as online discussions go, at least IME.
I believe the original back in the 40’s or 50s (not the version from Deliverance) was recorded with a 4-string vs. a 5-string banjo. They dueled. Not sure who won… maybe the 5-string as it went on to face the guitar in Deliverance.
I try to avoid political opinion pieces in general these days - so many of them are content-free rants that add nothing to my understanding of whatever issue they’re blathering about. It’s hard enough finding reliable news stories that aren’t riddled with opinions without spending time reading pieces with no factual information at all in them. And that applies to both right and left.
