DH and I can find that handy. Of course, we solved that with our current apartment by having two bathrooms
(we wanted the bigger apartment, and I don’t think there’s a 2-bedroom model with only 1 bathroom). OK, so one bathroom also serves as a laundry room, plus having the cat’s litterbox.
Our main bathroom has a vanity with double sinks, but the bathroom is so small and the sinks so close together, there’s no way we could both use them at the same time. I’d much rather have one sink and some counter space.
I’ll defend big houses, on the cleaning front anyway. If there are no kids and you don’t “entertain” a lot and if there’s not a lot of clutter, cleaning isn’t that hard.
I have a house keeper that comes every two weeks to clean my three bedroom, two bath house. I’m not mega rich nor am I paying someone a starvation wage. It usually takes her about 3 hours to clean the house and I’m giving her $60, so $20 an hour isn’t so bad. Housekeepers aren’t some crazy expensive, unattainable luxury-- though it’s certainly a nice perk to be able to swing.
Once every two weeks is good for me because I live alone, so the house doesn’t get ridiculously dirty (terribly often). I mostly have a house keeper because half the house is tile and my ass is too lazy to ever clean that. Ever. And so I don’t end up on some weird and sad episode of Hoarders, I pay $60 every two weeks to have her come deep clean my house and dust and scrub the things I’ll never dust and scrub.
In Madrid, you can get apartments the same size within a 15’ walk of each other (or, if you prefer it, two subway stops away), with one of them having a rent twice or thrice the other one. My great-aunt’s flat and those above hers were considered to be about twice as valuable as the ones below: she was the first one to have views of the Royal Palace’s gardens (those below have views of a medium-sized street with tons of traffic and of a brick wall).
I’d love for you to show me where I can hire some poor immigrant at starvation wage to clean my house. The cheapest I could find charge WAY above starvation wage - immigrants or not.
