Don’t bother. I’ve had burgers the “right” way and though they are better than McDonald’s, they are no better than what you can get at one of hundreds of locally owned burger joints. At the burger joints you don’t have to wait in line for a long time either.
I’ve had the fries both ways, and they make me want to puke. One way they are basically potato sticks, the other like Ore-Ida fries not quite cooked enough.
I’m betting What-a-Burger is far superior.
(And what kind of place makes the edible versions of their food available only by special request? )
Holy crap, you’re mentioning the Habit? The Habit’s pretty good, but they don’t sell chiliburgers on State Street so I’ve been boycotting them. Yeah. there are In 'n Outs all over California. I doubt you have to go to San Francisco to get one.
Love The Hat, but there are very few locations and they are tough to get to. Have a super greasy pastrami sandwich also while you are there.
Gotta mention a few other SoCal standouts. My fave is Tommy’s, but you gotta give Fatburger a try also.
Well, as stated, I LOVE In-N-Out, but that’s wrong. The burgers all have “spread” on them - It’s the orange stuff on the fries here. Not that it’s bad, but it IS present, unless you ask for no spread.
I feel sorry for all you poor souls that don’t live in Oregon or Washington (sadly, that even includes me) that don’t have access to Burgerville. I’d kill (a cow) for a Pepperbacon Tillamook Chedder Cheese Burger right about now. Pair it up with an Oregon Strawberry Milkshake and a side of Walla-Walla Sweet Onion Rings… fucking orgasm of saturated ecstasy right there, man.
Well, sure. Long lines may be present anywhere, but yeah, a great sit-down Burger Joint is better than In-N-Out. But for food they throw through your car window, In-N-Out is great, and the Animal-Style Fries are just superior, PERIOD, regardless of restaurant type, IMHO.
He’ll be in good company in hell. I’d sooner do WhataBurger than In=n=Out. Now, just to trainjack, Fatburger is better than either by about half or better.
I remember my first in and out burger, I was majorly underimpressed. After being told over and over that I would just LOVE in and out and it was the greatest thing since the orgasm I tried it out. Meh, might as well have Wendy’s.
Didn’t read far enough down, I see Daryl Lict beat me to the Fatburger, and we’re already at Hi-Jack in the box who rate LOWER THAN IN N OUT. I’m not shouting, really. Just had a wierd keyboard fault. It’s better now. I wasn’t yelling, really.
I’m going to reboot my machine and go get an 2x4, animal style. Maybe the fries.
If you find yourself in the South Bay area, you might want to check out **Clarkes Charcoal Broiler **(Mt. View and Los Altos) and Kirk’s Steakburgers (Campbell, Cupertino, Santa Clara and Palo Alto).
Yeah. I love the Habit. I don’t know how far they have extended, now. I was under the impression that they changed their name from Hamburger Habit to The Habit when they were extending themselves outside of SB County. But, the only other one I have seen was in Ventura.
It’s a great burger. One of the best I have ever had. Super tasty and well cooked.
Regarding In and Out I adore the well done fries. And, I like the idea of a secret menu. Sadly, aside from the well done fries I don’t bother with any of it. I just like a double double with cheese nothing special. I seem to recall In and Out having a secret burger that didn’t involve rolls well before the Atkins craze. Then again, I found out later that the last Atkins Craze was the second wave of it. So, maybe they brought it around then.
Uhh, here in Southern California, the South Bay is considered to be the beach cities of Torrance, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates, El Segundo, and Carson, Hawthorne and Lawndale (sorta)*. Back in the seventies, there was a failed effort to incorporate as a new county with that name, so I think the SoCal version is the one that is entitled to be the default South Bay area that doesn’t require disambiguation.
Question: how do they compare to Hardee’s schmancy burgers?
I’ve been eating beef for a little less than a year. I goddam love getting a burger medium rare at a decent restaurant–a pub in town makes them with spicy mustard and killer fries, half a pound of pure goodness on a kaiser roll. But the few fast food burgers I’ve tried, including Hardee’s, including a local place that’s more-or-less fast food, have been nasty: flat, overcooked patties that taste like grease and nothing else.
Are there any fast-food burgers that are good and thick and not overcooked? I could take medium, I think, but not cooked to gristle.
Fatburger, and The Habit. If you’re calling it “Hardee’s” instead of “Carls Jr” you are nowhere near a The Habit, or even an In-n-out, so you might look for a Fatburger. I’ve never been to Sonic or Whataburger.
In-n-out burgers (normal ones, not the 100x100 nonsense) are a LOT smaller. Think old-school McDonalds sizing. They taste better than Mickey D’s/Wendy’s/BK, aren’t cremated like Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr, and are really pretty inexpensive. But, all in all, I have to vote for eat there once, buy the T-shirt, and continue questing elsewhere for a yummy fastfood burger.
