Now that Iraq is an official mess, I see that Bush and his cronies are now sucking up to France, Germany and Russia to try to drum up support in the UN - financial and troop support - so we can get the hell out of this mess. (Especially now that the polls are showing 2004 will not be a Bush walk in the park for re-election.)
Hmm…where are the beaters of the war drums who were ordering their damn “Freedom Fries” at MacDonald’s? I thought Bush declared an end to this war…several billion dollars ago, and several hundred casualties ago. And wasn’t there supposed to be millions of Iraqi’s tossing rose petals on the streets cheering, “USA, All The Way!”.
The sad thing is that France, Germany and Russia have more class than we do. An at this point in time, and they will probably help, though we certainly don’t deserve it.
Just galls me to no end to remember a very short time ago when the idiots at the bullypulpit ridiculed the UN as a useless bunch of namby-pambies.
If ever the UN had balls, I wish they would tell Bush, “We’ll consider saving your butt - after November 2004.”
How about helping Iraq not be such a shithole? Isn’t the job of the UN to provide assistance to nations like Iraq?
Truth is that you’ve shown yourself to have as much class as France or Russia - none. To suggest that out of petty spite, the UN should withhold aid and assistance that could shorten the death and destruction in Iraq truly indicates the mind of a child. How many lives is getting Bush out of office worth to you?
If the UN can’t show itself to be above the petty arrogance of national leaders, what the fuck is the point of having it?
Now I’m going home to order a burger with Freedom Fries, some Freedom Vanilla Ice cream for desert, and for breakfast - Freedom Toast with a side of France Can Eat My Ass.

Well the phrase I read was quiet behind the scenes diplomacy. To avoid the sort of brawl that France, Germany , Belgium, and Russia caused in the first place by refusing to budge on Iraq.
Fine , if the UN finally puts its stamp on Iraq and gets various countrys like India and whomever to pony up troops cool, its not gonna be till december before the navy is ready for sustained operations, 04 for the election ,and 05 its Irans turn at having a regime change.
This one is still in the chatting stages so I am gonna wait till W , speaks at the UN sometime between now and next week.
The UN Charter has no obvious references to petty recriminations. Could you point me to the relevant section? I’m having trouble understanding why pissing off the Americans should be a higher priority than a people without electricity, a government, etc.
In answer to rjung, very little. Why is this relevant? Are we aiming for the lowest common denominator here?
Okay, so Bush pleading for aid from the UN, after he claimed that they’d “failed”, among other things, isn’t too classy. But does that mean that the UN shouldn’t aid Iraq?
Regardless of the blend of stupidity, flagrant dishonesty, and outright assholishness of the Bush Administration, making the people of Iraq pay for Bush & Co.'s sins is absolutely wrong. I don’t want to see Iraq descend into the horrors of anarchy just so Dubya, Dick, Donald, and Wolfie can get their comeuppance, no matter how deserved.
Last winter, as is now evident, France & Co. were absolutely in the right in trying to prevent this invasion, and the whole “Freedom Fries” movement of the time now looks pretty ridiculous.
As far as the current pissing match between Bush and France is concerned, both sides are doing discredit to themselves. (And that’s difficult for the Bushies, given their starting point.) But Bush has to remember that if other countries are going to commit troops, they have a right to a say in how the show is being run. That’s the way the world’s always worked. So if he cares about the people of Iraq - the last possible remaining justification for this war - he’d better get off his ass and make whatever concessions are necessary to save their asses.
But I simply don’t think the UN should provide whatever assistance the U.S. deems necessary, under U.S. command - which appears to be what the U.S. is demanding. If they want U.N. help, accept that the U.N. can call the tune wherever it’s paying the piper.
I have to pray that the UN steps up to the plate, regardless. It is about the only scenario with even a scrap of hope, that the UN’s reputation for comparative nuetrality will help. There are elements of hoping for a miracle in that expressed wish, but no humane person could hope otherwise.
Regardless of what diplomatic humiliation GeeDubya has to face, if the UN saves his bacon he will bring the troops home to victory parades. He will pour praise on our brave troops while being careful to stand close enough so that plenty splashes on to him. And his flight suit.
What? They’re too honest to pull some tawdry crap like that?
Kofi wants the UN to be seen as a player , rather than a sidekick , so he is gonna push the Bush agenda.
France , Germany , Russia all want in on the recontruction projects and are not likely to commit troops no matter what , so agreeing to have an american commander is a given for them, they may press for a change sometime in the future ,but for now its the contracts plus a normalization of relations with the states.
The smaller powers want in on the goodies too, but they want a UN blanket for some reason , but they will accept that for the moment , the supreme commander will be the US general, due to the amount of troops in country.
I would not really read much into this , till the hard facts come out ,but for the most part , having the UN come in does more for a bush election ,than it does for the democrats.
The UN is ‘irrelevant’, remember? It shouldn’t hurt the Democrats at all, if they play it smart.
First they need to play 2 video clips together in a commercial:
“We will find Osama Bin Laden whatever it takes, no matter how long, dead or alive, it’s our only priority.”
next to
“I have no idea where he is, it’s not a priority to us”.
And the next commercial can have 2 more clips:
“The UN is irrelevant”
next to
“Please UN come save my sorry ass as I completely underestimated this Iraq strategery and need help”
Really. The doubletalk is getting old. Democrats need to play the right card. Exposing Bush & Co for being liars should score enough points. And to add a little icing on this cake, let’s throw in a bit of
“We know for a matter of fact and have intelligence to prove the existance of WMD in Iraq that pose an immediate threat to the USA”
next to
“We don’t know where the WMD is. We can only assume they have them hidden somewhere or destroyed them. But we will keep looking!”
I supported the war originally, but looking back, I’m pretty sure now that it was the US that refused to budge.
We wouldn’t wait becuase Saddam had WMD at his fingertips it seemed. At any moment he could show up on US soil with his bio. weapons and kill millions of us.
Now we can’t even find the damn things, if they’ve existed in the past two years, you’d think we’d have something wouldn’t you?
I’m simply a firm believer that others will do unto you what you have done unto others. Since Bush dissed the UN, now karma’s returning to bite him in the ass.
My personal feelings are the same as RickJay’s, in any case.
