I joined, and pledged support to Yes California today.

"Hey, US! We’re going to take away your ability to project force in the Pacific while removing 2.5 trillion of economic activity.

But, seriously, is it OK if our guys can still remain citizens?

Kthxbai!"

The bong comment really makes me laugh. California has a 31 BILLION dollar a year marijuana crop, much of which is exported to other states. Look to your left, now to your right, those are bongs my friend, and they are burning California weed. That 31 billion isn’t counted in CA’s GDP yet. It will be soon enough though, because growing is legal and taxable (in CA) starting in 2018. Expect that amount to increase considerably with all the “grass roots” farmers taking part in this new part time earning opportunity. The tax you’ll (consumers) pay (15%) for this crop will add greatly to our state’s coffers. So yes, we’ll laugh at the bong comment, we laugh all the way to the bank.
The vote is going to happen. It’s going to happen in early 2019. Wasn’t all that many years ago I thought things like a racist maggot headed to the white house, or legal marijuana would never come our way either. Times change, people change.

Because projecting forces in the Pacific is so necessary. Those people in Easter island, and the Kwajalein atoll are planning an imminent attack of Oregon for the lumber to make rafts to sail against the US. And North Korea is about to attack California because they want to flank South Korea’s rear. Yeah, you got a point.

PS no one is suggesting the US move it’s bases from CA anymore than England is suggesting the US move it’s bases out of England.

There’s Hawaii. There’s Alaska.

Yes, Morgernstern, projecting force in the Pacific is necessary as we have Pacific States and Territories that are not part of the contiguous 48.

~California dreamin’ ~

this just shows how impulsive, immature, and poorly thought out this “movement” is. “We’re going to leave the union! but somehow keep our US citizenship! And… uh… take the other states we need with us!”

“Yes California” should really be titled “California doesn’t like you so we’re talking our bat and ball and leaving.”

all this election has shown is that as a society, we are collectively a horrendously ugly people. we just take turns at being the ugliest from time to time.

This has become more of a debate than what should be in MPSIMS. Since this is about a future ballot referendum it belongs in Elections rather than GD. Moving it now.

It’s more of a parody thread than anything.

There was a petition in the wake of the U.K. Brexit result for London to declare itself independent from the U.K. and apply to join the European Union.

I signed it. Since Brexit, my sense of identity, in order of priority, is something like this:

  1. Liberals/progressives wherever they may be
  2. The world
  3. London
  4. Europe
  5. Scotland (Scotland voted to stay in the E.U. and I had a Scottish grandmother)
  6. The U.K.

I feel disgusted and ashamed by my fellow countrymen and women and it will take a long time, if ever, for me to take pride in my nation again. Any people that would make a repugnant cretin like Nigel Farage (Brexit orchestrator and smiling face of neo-fascist bigotry) happy are no people of mine.

According to U.K. P.M. Theresa May, I am a Nowhere Man: “If you believe you are a citizen of the world, you are a citizen of nowhere”.

Are you aware that there was a serious debate about Britain moving its military bases out of Scotland had Scotland declared independence? In what way do you think that EXACT SAME DEBATE was not applicable to the question of whether the U.S. would maintain military bases in California?

By the way, in terms of negotiating position, its rather foolish to, on one hand, tell the United States that it doesn’t need bases on “your” territory, and then on the other hand also argue that the U.S. has no reason to move bases out of “your” territory. Sending clear messages to fellow sovereign countries that you wish to maintain good relations with is an importance practice to start working on.

That’s great and it will have as much effect as the petitions for Texas to secede that were floating around when Obama took office.

Yep. Just sheer silliness.

California already has a National Anthem.

DC just overwhelmingly voted to become a state! Are we free yet?

Doesn’t want the USA involved with California except to provide free military protection and free trade. Oh, and citizenship.

Do you really fail to understand how the process works? It isn’t up to your state. California does not have the power to make such a choice. Your vote is irrelevant.

Why yes, that is part of the issue.

This is a ridiculous idea. It very fairly belongs in the stupid democratic idea thread.

Where are y’all going to get your water?

Indeed there will be. A pink one! Sadly, also invisible.

far as I can tell, post secession born children in the People’s Democratic Republic of California would NOT automatically be US citizens by virtue of parental dual citizenship.
It’s not in the 14th Amendment, so please tell me where to find it?

By-the-by, I am corrected, the citizens of PRoC (pre rebellion) would indeed retain US citizenship, a meaningless title as they most certainly would not easily, if at all, be allowed into the US, nor would they, as citizens in rebellion and insurrection, be allowed to vote.

To add to this, what happens when the transmission lines for the power-grid are physically cut? I don’t know if CA is an importer or exporter of electrical power over-all
