I just bought a sea kayak!

Yup, Mr. Athena and I are the proud owners of two brand spankin’ new sea kayaks. I got an Eddyline Nighthawk and Mr. Athena got a Current Design Storm.

We will eventually paddle on Lake Superior, but for the time being we’ll limit ourselves to the many, many inland lakes and rivers around here. It looks like just too much fun! Of course, there’s a lot of safety issues we need to get good at.

Once we’re good at it, it’ll be on to secluded beaches and lovely rocky cliffs. Eventually I’d like to do a trip to the Apostle Islands, but that will have to wait for next summer probably. I’m so excited!

I went to the Apostle Islands over 4th of July, and was on the north shore this past weekend. I saw kyakers aplenty. I bet you’ll have tons o fun. It’s something I would like to try. Have you taken lessons, or is that what the kyaks are for?

We’ll be taking lessons, both safety and other. Sea kayaks aren’t as tricky as river kayaks as far as learning, but there’s definitely stuff I need to know.

Athena, that’s great! And I’m jealous, too! I took a kayaking class here in the Lansing area, and loved it. Then I separated a shoulder skiing, and haven’t really tried to do any kayaking since. The Apostles sound like a neat destination. You might try going to Munising and go play around Grand Island, too. There’s a shipwreck in a little harbor on the south end of the island that you should be able to snorkle if you want. Go look at the glass bottom boat trip webpage and look for the Bermuda for details.

I’m jealous, too! My best fiend just got back from a trip to Canada, where he kayaked for the first time. (And second and third times as well.) He’s going to build his own wooden kayak.

I was looking at kayaks at REI last year and was going to take an ocean kayaking class, but I never got around to it.

You know, I can spell kayak. I guess that’s what I get for a pre-coffee post.

Have you considered kayaking around Isle Royale? Not to hijack, but I think it’s hilarious that it’s part of Michigan.

Johnny: do it. You’ll love it.

easy e: It’s just that kind of place - a land of contrasts and opposites. About the only thing I’d add would be some mountains. Anyone out in the Rockies want to trade just a small mountain for say, Detroit?

Well, Ive never kiaked, but ive “Duckyed” (an inflatable kiak) on the New River in West Virginia. It ROCKED. I spent most of the time out of the ducky trying not to drown in the rapids, but like I said IT ROCKED!!!

My 1.5 cents.
