I just bought Morrowind, and it won't run well. Help!

It seems my computer is too new for Morrowind. I just bought the GOTY edition at Half Price Books for $6; I figure it is finally time to play one of the most highly rated games of the past 10 years!

Here are my stats:

Win7 Home Premium (64-bit)
8 GB RAM
GeForce 9100
2.5 GHz AMD Athlon 7550 Dual-Core processor

With this setup, the game is unplayably slow. What gives? How do I make this work?

Your specs should be fine as far as I know. Looks like you might have to play with some of the settings. It’s been a while since I played Morrowind, but I found I had to turn down or off a lot of the graphics options - particularly shadows I think.

Here’s a link to an insanely detailed tweak guide which almost certainly contains an answer to your problem somewhere.

A geforce 9100 is basically a $5 video card, integrated I would imagine. It’s meant to run windows and that’s about it. Morrowind isn’t very demanding so you may be able to run it playably at low setting and resolutions, but it’s really not a 3d video card. So it isn’t that your computer is too new - it’s basically, like most computers, lacking in hardware that does 3d work.

You could spend $50 and get something like a Radoen 5450 which should be several times faster. I would recommend spending a little more (maybe $80) to get something pretty good.

I’m doubtful of the video being the problem based on this site’s tech requirements info. I mean, if they support something as old as a TNT2…

This thread on Bethesda’s site may be of help.

Yeah. My roommate ran it on a laptop from 2002 with embedded graphics.
