I believe checks are being mailed to people who got a refund anticipation loan, and maybe to those who paid their filing fees out of their refund. Neither of those things applied to us, so I didn’t pay that much attention.

When I was in college, my dad would claim me as a dependant. So I couldn’t claim myself. Since he was in a higher tax bracket, he’d give me the money I’d have gotten, and he’d still have money left over. Seemed like a good deal for both of us.
