Hmm, porcupine gets laid off 2 days before a Dopefest, I got laid off 2 days before a Dopefest (London). Porcupine is in software development, I’m in software development. Porcupine got a decent severance package, I got a decent severance package. Start the Twilight Zone music.
Well, today was a tough day - an emotional roller coaster. It was my last official day in the office. I’ve been dropping in most days this week to make the rounds, catch up with people, and schmooze. I sent off a few last emails to say goodbye to people I hadn’t been able to catch in person, filled out my inventory sheet, and turned in my badge to my boss (who also happens to be a good friend). Our entire team (the bulk of whom were laid off - a couple were transferred to other groups) went out for one last group lunch. My boss gave us all little boxes of Godiva chocolate.
I only teared up once or twice today.
There is some good news. There is a position in product management that is going to be opening up, which would be an excellent match for my skill-set. I have worked with the hiring manager, and he wants me for the job. My boss, her boss, and the department program coordinator are all pushing for me to have the job. So I may end up not leaving the company at all.
And the company we partnered with on the project wants to open up professional services office in the area and hire about 7 people. The only unfortunate thing is that there are more people than there are positions, which means we’ll be competing for the jobs.
