Congratulations.
It’s not at Outpost #31, is it?

Penguin a l’orange?
I am so envious. That’s one part of the earth I’ve always wanted to visit, but probably never will.
That Walt Disney movie about a guy who left his dogs and went back to look for them. Those leopard seals really look mean. Stay away from killer whale carcasses.
Awesome, and I hope you are able to regale us with tales, for I do love your tales. Please share with us when you can.
Is there a non-remote part of Akutan? There’s, what, wooden sidewalks, 20 trailers and a bar that you don’t want to ring the bell at unless you’re above flush.
If you were on the OTHER side, I hope you were holed up in one of the bunkers, at least.
Well, and pictures too. Get as many “cool” pictures as you can, the long night will be just about ending when you get there.
just remember, keep watching the skies.
God, please keep us informed—I’m just fascinated by this. Hell, I’d thought about applying for an Antarctic job myself, except that I don’t currently qualify (I have all my wisdom teeth, among other things).
could we do a travelling gnome thing for dopers only? it doesn’t have to be a gnome, but it would be cool to be part of something that started in Antartica.
Wow, cool.
A friend worked at McMurdo Station for 3 months in IT, two years back. He said it was a great experience.
Many years ago my boss took a sabbatical to lead an expedition in Antarctica. They were going to be on a shiop for a long time there with spare tim,e on their hands. So we gave him a copy of John Carpenter’s The Thing to play over and over for entertainment.
Be careful what you take.
I am so excited by this. What an adventure! Cooking in an exotic place, maybe the most exotic on Earth. When I saw who started this thread, my first thought was, “who else but fifty-six? He loves the damn cold!”
Be safe.
The traveling Cecil?
Frozen beans, surely.
My brother-in-law wintered over three times. Is that the correct term? Once while in the Navy and twice for companies. ITT? He made a LOT of money and met his first wife there! (Must have been slim pickings.) He made sure that the generators kept running and the electricity worked.
Are you going to be working in the lair of an evil super villian?
Werner Herzog made a Documentary about life at the Antarctic outposts, “Encounters at the End of the World”. I thought it was interesting, except for Herzog’s droll narration.
I know several guys that have wintered-over at McMurdo. They all said that the cook was everyone’s favorite. You should be good.
You may want to pick this up.
