Some band on SNL is doing a horrifying, falsetto, disco rendition of Pink Floyd’s immortal classic. Won’t somebody please make them stop.
Without having seen it it’s gotta be Scissor Sisters. Every other song I’ve heard of theirs is pretty good but Comfortably Numb was just a bad, bad decision by all involved.
Scissor Sisters. That’s them. Their first song wasn’t that bad but this one just made me want to cry.
That was never my favorite Floyd song, but that sounds painful.
I checked out the clip on AllMusic.com. LORD was that awful… it’s like what would happen if the Bee Gees did the song.
It’s a horrible time to be a Pink Floyd fan… I have a thread further down in the forum complaining about Korn’s butchery of “Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2” and now I see this thread.
If someone covers “Hey You” any time in the near future, I’m going to kill.
I was just about to open a thread on this very subject, but someone beat me to it. My frickin’ ears are bleeding. That song was an abomination. So was that guy’s outfit. It was a blue polyester sleeveless jumpsuit that tied around the neck! Who thought that was ever a good idea?
I don’t care HOW good Scissor Sisters might be. I hate them now.
While we’re at it, I saw Particle do an instrumental, double-time version of Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 a few years ago. Wasn’t awful, but it got uninteresting fairly rapidly, as bad jamming tends to do.
They aren’t. At all. While I admit to being a bit late in finally starting to appreciate 80’s music and thus might not “get them”, I think they outright suck. The Darkness too.
I don’t care if they are a tribute to 80’s bands… even as camp, they suck.
I didn’t see SNL tonight, but I cough like that version of Comfortably Numb.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t prefer it to the original by any stretch of the imagination; the first time I heard it, it took a minute to register what the song was and then, OMGWTF, but…it’s SO campy, and SO far off the original mood of the song, and with those two elements in place, SO well-executed in a “if you’re going to do it bad, you might as well do it really GOOD bad” way that it kinda grew on me.
Heh. Next thing you know, I’ll be defending Showgirls so fiercely I get banned.
Who decided we needed a tribute to 80s bands anyway? Can I get a vote on this committee? If something sucks the first time around, it doesn’t automatically get good when the trend recycles.
I don’t mind it so much
as far as disco goes…
There’s a Pit thread on the subject if you feel more strongly than the Cafe allows.
What was the other song they did on the show?
“Mary” is a good song, as is “Filthy/Gorgeous.”
Horrifyingly, “Comfortably Numb” has been nominated for a Grammy for best dance recording.
Yeah, sorry about that. I didn’t bother looking in CS because I didn’t think a Floyd fan could keep it clean enough.
Oh, the humanity!
So the techno-dance version I’m working on is a bad idea then?
I didn’t even know they had a Grammy for that.
I just saw the first song, and I must say, these guys have talent. That first song was pretty darned impressive.
I just wanted to record that impression before it gets obliterated when I hear Comfortably Numb.
I just heard the first song, too. Not bad. I think I’ll pass on Comfortably Numb. There oughta be a law against masacreing a PF song.
Dear God… first Korn’s “Another Brick in the Wall Pt. II” and now this?
A dark day for Floydians.
If you will excuse me, I’m going to play “Goodbye Cruel World”.
