I just drove past Fred Phelps. Well, not him specifically, but his congregation/extended family was there, at least. I had no idea that they would be in town. I first noticed the heavy police presence, then saw the signs (“You will burn in hell”), that told me that really crazy people were there. I next determined that actually someone really, really crazy was nearby when I saw more telltale signs (“God is your enemy”).
According to his website, they aren’t protesting anything specific except that the university has a GSA. I’ll bet even BYU has a GSA, he needs a better reason then that. Sounds like he is bored.
They were here Monday messing with traffic. Jerks!
The local high school formed a GSA so people in Kansas are threatened.
The article said that later this month the Westboro folks will be protesting at a Walt Whitman HS because - no, not because they formed a GSA, not because of anyone currently involved with the school, but because Walt “Whitman is thought to have been homosexual.” It’s a whole new depth of crazy.
Phred’s group likes high schools. More emotions running wild and more chance that somebody will do something so that Phred’s group can sue them. That’s their favorite way to get money.
I suggest no violence or even pies. If you want to do something, pull up a lawnchair and point and laugh. Nothing worse in the eyes of a Phred head than to realize that not only did they fail to generate hate but they’ve also entertained others at their own expense.
They’re at my church about every third week. But as I live in Topeka, and am Episcpalian, it’s not a surprise. WBC seems to especially hate liturgical style churches, Catholics, Episcopal, Lutheran, etc. Maybe he’d picket the Eastern Orthodox too, but there’s only one little congregation of them in town.
I’m about the age of Fred’s older kids, so I knew one of them in junior high. She’s one of his two girls who’s not now with the family, and two boys got away as well. But nine kids remained.
Someone upthread mentioned Jael Phelps. She ran for City Council a while back, and a coworker, not really knowing who she was(he was relatively new to Topeka) agreed to put up a yard sign for her. He wondered why his next door neighbors, (the lesbian couple) were suddenly cold shouldering him. I explained and he went and called his wife and told her to take down that sign RIGHT NOW! He managed to patch things up with the couple as well.
Let’s not ever forget that holier-than-thou Shirley Phelps Roper has a illegitimate son by an ex-con. Meaning she’s a whore with a bastard who should be stoned.

Has anybody done a doctoral thesis on their church? I mean, one crazy person isn’t remarkable, but the way his whole family has been systematically indoctrinated in a system of thought that most people would find deeply insane is worth studying.
God, it’s depressing to think about. Unless there’s a Crazy gene that they’ve all got, we can assume that Phelps’ kids might have been normal people if they’d been raised by almost anybody else.
The crazy bastard and his family have been here in Plattsburgh, NY a few times over the past several years.
In 2005, IIRC, they were protesting around town because of our (now former) gay mayor. It coincided with an annual festival of sorts so there was a crowd… Happened right in front of my building downtown, at least the main show.
Crazy bastard… Was something of a barely controlled mob scene.

The last two times, or maybe it was just once that was reported on over a few days, I can’t remember, was recent. Regarding the Laremey (sp?) project… They protested early Marchish at the local high school.
No big crowds (well, some people from the nearby college showed up, apparently, but no major crowd), freezing weather, and far away from any major center of population… Far from the summer 90ish degree weather in the middle of a public festival.
I heard they froze their asses off in front of a few pissed off college kids. Hope it was worth the gas money.
