Count me in as having long, thick, curly hair that’s not that easy to manage. As far as hair dressers, I’ve found that the best thing for someone with curly hair is a STYLIST with curly hair. No one else will understand your needs. The woman who does my hair knows how nervous I am about cutting off too much. that I need copious amount of gel (well, more than she’ll put on), and that I air-dry my hair. She might diffuse it a little bit (which I sometimes do) but otherwise she knows how I deal with it and it’s been great.
My problem with my hair is that because of how I wear it, I need to let it air dry. Which takes several hours. It’s almost comical how I schedule washing my hair to make sure there’s enough time for it to dry before I go to bed (I shower at night) or go out.
As for products, I’ve been using Queen Helene Cholesterol gel (not the cream) for about 6 years and it has served me well. It’s possible that because it’s so thick, that’s why it takes my hair so long to dry, but I really like the end result so I’ve stuck with it.
Holy cow, I totally forgot and saramalana reminded me. When I went to get my hair cut the other day, one of the hairdressers was BALD! Should that be allowed? I mean, wow.
I have the fine, curly, long hair that has a mind of it’s own. One stylist was not going to be intimidated and insisted on drying my hair. After tons of gels and waxes and what not, I looked like 1970s Cher. OK let me rephrase; I looked like a fat 1970s Cher with brown hair. Pin head, swinging hair, big body = not a pretty sight. What made it better was it was raining; one step outside the studio and my hair seized into a mid-back length afro. Almost exactly like bad perm Streisand, but longer. And DeHusband couldn’t understand why I would pay someone to do that to my head.
I feel your pain! I am currently sporting a Weird Al hairdo, which seems to be my only choice unless I wish to switch to a Gilda Radner look. I just graduated college and am desperately searching for a ‘professional’ look, but nothing is working. All of my styling attempts result in major frizz. I am getting desperate enough to seek out professional help, but every hairstylist I’ve ever been to gets out the dryer and frizzes/teases my hair into a bush. I can always recognize the look of panic in their eyes when they realize what they have done.
The last time I had my hair styled, I decided to go to one of those silly-expensive salons in the hopes that they would be better trained. The stylist convinced me to get layers which ended up looking like big poofy dog ears on each side of my head. They don’t seem to understand the shrinking factor-- shorter hair = curlier hair = haircuts that are way shorter than the stylist intended.
I’ve debated getting my hair cut short, but I’m afraid of looking like Keri Russell (Felicity).
I have no idea what to do with my hair. It is straight, but very thick, and about shoulder length, I always end up tying it back in a ponytail, because if I try and leave it untied it gets frizzy and looks like it needs a comb every 10 minutes. I’m thinking of shaving my head (…again)
