Raising a ludicrous and offensive proposition and then trying to deflect heat with “gee, I’m only asking questions” is a hallmark of the JAQ species, seen with depressing frequency on message boards and in comments sections of online articles (our definition of what constitutes “ridicule” must also differ radically).
JAQoffs are not necessarily conspiracy theorists (although the two overlap to some extent). The tactic is simply a dishonest way to push a firmly held belief under the pretense that the person is undecided so don’t pick on poor little me.
Such folks are rarely if ever amenable to having their minds changed by logic (including that which I and others presented here and which you interpreted as ridicule). If one is determined to believe garbage because someone on the Internet was mean to them, they were hopeless to begin with. Those on the fence are another story (and they are also extremely unlikely to ignore cogent arguments on the grounds that someone presenting them wasn’t being nice enough.*
*in addition to JAQers, a common species encountered in online discussions is the person who ignores a long sequence of well-thought out responses on a topic to hone in on one in which sarcasm or insults are employed, announcing that oooh, your side is just turning off people because you’re all such meanies. Such a person is a concern troll (or its variant, the tone troll).
