I liked the Ratchet and Clank series of games for PS2. I have played them all, and am interested in another game along the same vein for PS2. Anyone have any suggestions?
Oh, and before anyone chimes in with a Jak and Daxter suggestion, I tried the original Jak/Daxter and did not enjoy it.
I have considered “Destroy all Humans” but the reviews make it sound like it’s too easy…what do you all think?
Well, I’ll try. It was a pretty cool 3D game that tried not to take itself too seriously. It isn’t a twitch game, and I could care less about playing it online, it was just a cool way to kill a lot of time. I like that you got stronger (but so did the enemies) as you progressed, and that your could find different weapons (which were useful depending on your situation) and could upgrade them, but mostly I just like the challenge of the different levels and puzzles and the humorous backstory. I think “going Commando” was the best of the lot, as it seemed to have the best balance of challenges, puzzles, and changes of venue of all the games. For example, there were parts when you would have to use an unlocker, which took you into a small mini-game requiring you to flip little blocks in the right sequence in order to unlock doors, and there were parts where you had to drive a hoverbike, and parts where you had to fly a starfighter-type spaceship and shoot enemies. This tended to break the game up a little without being too overwhelming.
You won’t do much better than Psychonauts, the best game nobody played. It has many of the elements you mention: getting new weapons (actually, new psychic powers) periodically that upgrade; different levels (pretty well every level takes place inside someone’s mind, and each mind is radically different and has its own rules); a humorous story (it was created by Tim Schafer, known for his imaginative and humorous storytelling in Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and the Monkey Island series); and lots of basic platforming fun.
And if you don’t laugh out loud at the Lungfish level, I’ll eat my hat.
Maybe you’d like Ty: The Tasmanian Tiger. Similar to R&C in that you get different weapons and it has stuff to find by going back to old stages with the new weapons. I think there’s 3 of them at the moment.
Also, Ape Escape series is awesome. I think 3 & 4 are on PS2.
Destroy All Humans isn’t too easy, but it is short. It’s a fun game though, and there’s a sequel out now, where you get to fight hippies.
Have you considered any of the Oddworld games? I don’t think they ever released any for the PS2, but they did for the PS. Also, for a little change of pace, how about The Bard’s Tale. No real minigames in it, but it’s funny.
